I went grocery shopping at about 9:00 a.m. in Minneapolis and 2 people shopping made comments to me about stocking up on food for Y2K. One woman said she was afraid. The store was packed by the time I left at 10:30 a.m. so I'm very glad I went early. I think people are just going out for some last minute things (I'm optimistic I know). A local TV station was live in a man's home who just started making preps 2 weeks ago. He had standard food, water, medical supplies but the most unsettling piece of preparation was his GUN and the camera zoomed in on it several times. Here's hoping no one will have to use a gun. ~Diane

-- Don (whytocay@hotmail.com), December 30, 1999.

Greetings. Glad to see you all again. I went to several stores this morning. I noticed batteries were low, but not depleted. Spring Water was low, but there was alot of drinking water. Gas stations were not extra busy. At Fred Meyer they were all out of lamp oil. So I went across the street to K-Mart and there was alot of it. Same thing with propane. The Dow and NASDAQ fell slightly today but not much. Now I've had enough being serious, going bact to troll mode again.

I'm so mad about that 'Don't Top Off Your Gas-Tank' Thing, that not only did I top off the gas tank on my fleet of 300 vehicles, I pumped an extra 3 gallons of gas on the ground for each vehicle. Around the time I started pumping gas for my Armored Personnell Carrier (vehicle #96) I got bored and started spraying other customers with gas. Kind of like a war with water hoses, only this was with gas. Apparently some older lady didn't think this was very funny because she belted me upside of my head.

I had to finish pumping the rest of my fleet at another gas station. Then I thought I'd show TPTB a thing or two by hoarding all of the candy bars in their snack shop. If anyone wants a bottle of Coke or a Butterfinger I'll be glad to e-mail you one!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! For bringing this site back up. Sure missed you all!

Reporting from northern Indiana. Columbia City Super Walmart completely out of propane - warehouse out. Last pallet of water was set out yesterday. Everything else is plentiful. ( I was not scheduled to work today so can't say what is there today.) The pharmacy is filling an average of 500 prescriptions per day. Some of this is due to a flu epidemic in this area but a lot are preparation for Y2K.

Side note - Our pharmacy got a memo from the home office two weeks ago to find personnel available to home deliver medications after the first of the year?? - has all the pharmacists stumped. Our supervisor promptly ordered twice the usual, top 200 meds for our inventory. Also, we were supposed to get a new operating system for the pharmacy computers in November - never delivered.

Did anyone else read (Money Magazine) about the computer system for Walmart being second largest in U.S. (second only to Department of Defense)?

Present and accounted for.

Got my paycheck today, and took out about $900. No problems. Went around to the local stores. Bottled water and TP have been hit pretty hard. 3/4 of the water on display at the local Kroger was gone. At the Wal-Mart all of the gallon jugs of water were gone. Bottled water was hit hard, but about half of the display was still available. Lines but no real panic.

Found out something today - as I rushed home from our small town gas station, which was doing roaring trade (the kid said he would rather not work tomorrow - it would be crazy there), have to admit that I am addicted to this forum....and I didn't have to wait the extra hour I thought I would for it to come back.

As a techie friend of mine says "after all this fuss, I would like to see a little something happen", O.K. - maybe something to talk about.

-- Laurane (familyties@rttinc.com), December 30, 1999.

Another relieved regular.

In honor of our "shadow selves", our regular companions the trolls and pollies who've been with us since Day One, I propose we declare tomorrow "Rodney King Day" and ask the immortal question:

"Can we all get along."

(Come sit down on the couch right here, Suck & all (pat, pat), pop a beer, and let's watch this SUPERBOWL together, eh? We can fight again on Monday.)

-- jor-el (jor-el@krypton.uni), December 30, 1999.

Good idea Jor-el...

I suspect the pollies missed this site as much as the rest of us... let's sit back, pop a beer, and watch the show... we've all placed our bets already, so what's left to argue?

Prepped for 7, expecting 5, hoping for 3....

Deb M. reporting for duty!

Central Ohio report:

Local Wal-Mart - Bottled water is GONE. Preppers are very evident in line.

Local Krogers - Still some bottled water available, ditto about preppers in many checkout lines.

Two gas stations had small lines (to end of driveway) and there were more than a few 5 gallon cans being filled.

I hope all you assholes (Ludi, Nabi, pissed, Craig, Shakey, Vern, and others too numerous to mention) that have been all over Phil Greenspuns ass send him a nice apology for your malicious, unwarranted attacks on his character. The TB2000 fora are all back in operation now (now thanks to any of you dip shits!) and it was nothing more than a technical issue as Phil stated -- no conspiracy, no censorship, nothing nefarious whatsoever. Okay, this is the third time today I have answered roll call. Enough already!!! Reporting from GA - picked up another load of firewood - supplier now nearly wiped out. Bottled water gone in Wally World - congestion in the canned goods/soup aisle. Looks like lots of 3 -day storm prepping to me. Fema in GA reporting they are ready for anything -including "people" problems. Now whatever could they mean by that? People don't riot and cause mayhem, do they??? BTW - I fully intend to continue to participate in the Texas forum - they worked so hard to get it tweeked for us - only a click away, you know.

Reporting in from coastal Maine sir; afternoon report: Nothing stirring at the local Walmart, nothing stirring at the local banks, nothing stirring at the local gas stations....However, Major- and I mean MAJOR- preps at the local feed store. I was in line behind a woman who had 5 bags of 40lb dog food, 8 bags of 20 lb cat food in her cart. I casually mentioned how much I liked that brand of dog food, and she, just as casually said yes, her dog (note the singular usage!) agreed....over and out. What is my next task, sir?

Sir, yes sir! Private Gecko reporting for duty sir.

Permission to speak sir?

Private Gecko wishes to report mass apathy in the oil industry today sir. Most of the industry played golf today sir, volumes were dismal, phones were silent.

Private Gecko wishes to report that this is a bad omen sir. The industry has not taken the issue seriously enough sir. It has NOT checked all the chips as recommended by NIST and Cherry. It has NOT been diligent in it's pursuit of truth from vendors, but has chosen instead to trust implicity sir.

Private Gecko believes that this strategy may result in casualties within his industry sir and is greatly troubled about this.

Private Gecko wishes to warn those living near refineries that this is the case. He is concerned for civilians who are in proximity to these plants.

He is dismayed to see legitimate sources of information being shut down by POTUS.

God help me! I know the pain of addiction withdrawal. When I couldn't get on the board I felt panicky, sweaty and tense. It was amazing how lost I felt without you all. I wondered if I would EVER get another invitation to mud wrestle. I missed Homers incredable news flashes, as well as the individual and collective wisdom and love of forum members.

"Are we there yet, Mom? Can we stay a while or will they move our bed again?!" dr. ben here but having a hard time explaining all this to the kids! Thanks to Phil, Diane, Chuck and a cast of thousands. Also thanks to Lisa who is doing yeoman work at txnet trying to keep us sane.

TB2000 was missed and harraay(!) for us that she's back.

I'm here not only because of the sense of community and shared concern but because I don't trust that the "official" newsproviders are going to provide me with the unfiltered, unspun news about Y2K or even related stories.

Half the city in my town (300,000) could be without power for hours and we never hear a thing about it on the 6 O'clock news or read about it in the paper the next day. It's as if it didn't happen and don't anybody talk about it.

Glad TB2000 is back. Now I feel I'm in touch with what is happening across America and the world. With Rather/Jennings and the rest I only get what "they" want me to know and "how" they want me to know it.

Bless you all in 2000. sdb

Marcia: Do you like to mudwrestle?

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.cum), December 30, 1999.

Here.

Calm, moderate prepping going on in the wilds of West Jersey.

Actual conversation overheard in Shop Rite last night:

Clerk A: Where's the Sterno?

Clerk B (exasperated): I don't know. What IS Sterno? I don't even know what it is.

A co-worker share the location of a pure, little-known spring nearby today. I really don't expect things to come to that, but I felt better knowing just the same.

People are definitely staying put this weekend.

Finally found the board was back up. WHEW!!!

I guess I've grown a little dependent on yall's company.

It's 11:40 pm EST and I am at work performing final backups on all of our network servers. I'll come back in tomorrow evening and shut them down for the rollover!

I think I'll head over to the 24 hour Wal-Mart and see what's cookin on the way home....

Here in Albuquerque. Lot's of folks buying water at Smith's. No eggs for available for the past two days. Very busy at Sam's club.

Stocked up on wine. Sighted in the scopes for the 9 mm carbine and 22 LR. Received another Kevlar helmet. Body armor ordered. Finished setting up HAM radio rig.

Greetings to everyone (hey - Keith on Big Island!!) Reporting from boondocks of the island of Hawaii - heard at teensy PO in Pahoa (big reward if anyone knows where that is) that Safeway parking lot was madhouse, took 1/2 hour to get out of there. (I think Hilo has population of about 45,000). Going to Hilo (main "city" on island) tomorrow - will report. Keith (posted above) told me that island has oil for 30 days - if elec goes out, so does most water on island. Love to you all - Aloha, Pram PS - Anyone from Oahu - please post status tomorrow - I have so many friends there, and they aren't on this forum!

A brief report from the front range of Colorado:

Sam's Club was packed tonight, lots of food going out the door, more than has been the case recently. No gas lines, regular grocery stores still well stocked. Just finished getting my diesel and kerosene. The local rent-all place that sells bulk kerosene and propane has been swamped for the past two days. The guy told me that over 2500 gal of propane went out yesterday. When I went back today for more kerosene, the propane line was even longer. They limited kerosene purchases to 30 gal per person. I'll have to take a couple of jerry cans back there tomorrow to finish up.

The local newspaper proclaims that y2k will not be a problem. Hope they're right, but I have my doubts.

Hi, my name is DC, and I'm a longtime lurkerette. I always figured I could quit "anytime I wanted to." I thought I just came here because I wanted to, not because I HAD to. I always figured I could go cold turkey when the time came.

Instead, after suffering withdrawal pains of epic proportions from a sudden and terrible "fora interruptus," I would like to humbly thank you for bringing me kicking and screaming into reality. I AM addicted to this place. Unfortunately, it would appear that an unavoidable but long foreseen "intervention" has taken place and rehab begins within hours.

Thank you for everything. May all be well with you and your loved ones in the new year.
