At walmart today

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I was at walmart today and lamp oil was down to 3 bottles per shelf.

I notice in the candle asle that they had emergency light kits. Which I never have seen before and I was all over Walmart a day before Christmas. Majorly stocking up on paper towels and tolite paper in big jumbo packs.

they had those emergency candles in our local (Kalamazoo, MI) Wal Mart, for several months now.

For what it is worth. They were not easy to find.

Hey Mushroom! I was born in Kalamazoo and lived there till 6th grade and then in country and back there for college and after - moved away in 1979! What's happening there? Are people aware at all?

If you have a grocery store that has a Mexican food section, there often are candles there - not sure what they use them for - maybe someone can tell me - I assume as an altar-type thing venerating Jesus, Mary, etc. I got 12 of them yesterday in N. Calif at Raley's at 99 cents each - they are very tall and burn for a long time! I've seen them in other grocery stores too.

I went to Wal-Mart today too. StarKist solid white tuna was .88 a can. Hormel chili .89. Store wasn't too busy and all the shelves seem full. I stopped in at a Brookshires grocery store and bought up the specials there. No empty shelves anywhere.

Sheri,

Most Mexican Americans practice a traditional form of Catholicism, where candle burning is an important adjunct to prayer.

What I have noticed this past week is that the 7 day Clear glass candles were almost depleted whereas the colored glass candles remain. I finished the depletion (bought 4). Clear Glass 7 day candles are also sold with red markings as "Emergency Lighting"...same candle, triple the price.

Walmart report - suburb north of Atlanta - very busy - bottled water gone - shopping cart congestion in the canned goods, soup area. Lots of 3 -day storm preppers IMHO.

Was at the local Big Kmart this afternoon. Had about 4 pallets(sp?) of toilet paper stacked 6 ft high by the electronics section. Also Winn Dixie had LOTS of reusable coleman 5 gal water containters sitting in the middle of the floor in front of each checkout lane. No shortages of anything yet tho. Hmm.

I found this interesting to say the least. Was in a wealthy part of a wealthy suburb at a local drug store. Guy (well-groomed) about my age is looking intently for a while at the toiletries. Finally, quickly grabs a bottle of RID lice shampoo. This in the middle of winter. Hmmmmmmm. Did my best not to make him feel uncomfortable, but had half a mind to blare out "what in the heck are you doin, You ain't one of them Y2K Kooks are you?".
