Is Ceramic Filtered (Berkey type) water supposed to taste bad?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

Just set up my AquaRain, which uses same ceramic filters as the Big Berkey. Now I've run the first batch of water through and have tasted it and it tastes terrible...like "ceramic" flavoring is all I can think of to describe it.

Question: will this go away with a few batches of water filtered through, or is this the way it is supposed to taste...YUKKY!? I've read posters awhile back raving about how good their filtered water tasted. How I hope....

since you posted this twice, I'll respond to this one.

As previously noted, you have to run AT LEAST 5 gallons of water through the filters to get rid of that "taste"

I was initially disappointed in my Katadyn Drip Filter (very similar to yours), but once I ran 10 gallons of water through it, no more "ceramic" taste.

Elaine - I have a Berky and found I needed to really clean the container as it had some sort of film inside of it, then run 2 or 3 full containers through the filter. On mine, by the second runthrough it tasted pretty good!

I have a Berk, my hubby followed the directions about running water thru it first and dumping it, before drinking. Did't have to do much cleaning of the unit. After the run through of water, it tastes great. In fact, I'm picky about water and this is good water.
