Monday December 27, 4:38 PM Multi-Million Pound Blaze Sweeps Power Plant

A devastating fire struck one of the biggest power plants in Europe today, causing damage estimated at millions of pounds.

The alarm was raised just before 11am when an oil-powered transformer at Drax power station near Selby in North Yorkshire caught fire.

More than 70 firefighters from across Yorkshire were called to tackle the blaze and they stopped it spreading to other parts of the plant.

Divisional officer Steve Couchman said: "This was a ferocious fire and it took us around three hours to bring it under control.

"The power station itself was evacuated, but we managed to prevent it spreading and the damage was confined to the transformer."

Thousands of gallons of foam were used to bring the blaze under control and extra supplies were brought in from local RAF bases as a precaution.

Two of the nine transformers at the power station - one of the largest in Europe - were shut down, but electricity supplies to homes and businesses were unaffected.

Engineers were later inspecting the damage to try to find the cause of the blaze. Firefighters were expected to stay on site overnight in case of re-ignition. Experts described the incident as a "multi-million pound fire".

So is this a doomer post or a polly post ???

{snip} Two of the nine transformers at the power station - one of the largest in Europe - were shut down, but electricity supplies to homes and businesses were unaffected. {end snip}

Is that the domino effect your fears rest on in action. It's all so interconnected isnt it ?

And I suppose the fire was caused by someone dropping an uncompliant cigarette end was it ?

Maybe this thread should have a big red OT stamped to it, but then again, as yet more proof that a major catastrophe doesnt mean a domino of failure, maybe its more ON topic than most of the usual stuff that gets dumped in here.

Mines a pint of IPA, cheers.
