Warders on Millennium stand-by

In Britain prisons are reported to be putting more than a thousand extra officers on stand-by on New Year's Eve.

They'll be on call to deal with any disturbances or security problems caused by the millennium bug affecting equipment in prisons.

The Prison Service says it can't rely on help from the police, who'll be too busy handling Millennium celebrations.

Normally only two hundred staff are on stand-by.

In our county, the city/county jail is not allowing visitation of prisoners for a week or more, starting New Years Eve, due to "Y2K concerns". This is a new building and facility, open less than a year, supposed to be "state of the art" building and equipment.
