Atlanta Starting to Prep

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I had trouble getting in the door for carts loaded with water leaving the Kroger this evening. By the time I could see the water almost all of the big bottles were gone. Parmalat "box" milk also gone, but fuel related supplies such as propane tanks, in good supply though wood was about gone. There were big gaps in the infant formula. Atlanta is one of the worse governed cities in the nation and our paper is silent on the possibilities. Some people are getting their info elsewhere. Last week I could get all the 2.5 gallon water jugs I wanted - not now.

Los Angeles is showing signs of strain on bottled water and water containers in stores. Last week, I even had two 5-gallon bottles stolen from my condominimum garage. They were hidden away from sight. I'm not sure what that means. Sure hope it benefits somebody.

Was at walmart in Indiana this weekend and saw many preps on display. some people buying storage boxes...could just be for Christmas ornaments though...seems as though people are prepping alittle.

Well, you can count the people here in Kansas "oblivious". I was at Sam's Club after the holidays and by the looks of all the carts, NO ONE was even thinking about Y2K. It's going to be interesting.

So. Calif., desert. Nothing, absoluty nothing is being done. Everything is in full supply. In town Sunday morning, K-Mart, nothing moving other than the sale on clothing. Yawnnn. Well, we'll see. A few more days till tell the tale.

The government has done an excellent job of dumbing down the people.

Was in Indiana Walmarts--both (West and East), and noticed lots of propane, and also a sign at checkouts limiting each person to one case of infant formula(low supplies).

I actually think many folks are prepping for the Second Coming of Santa; scope out if all Christmas decoration sales and such got snatched up! Was an actual cart ramming altercation a year or two ago at Target. Two women trying to snatch up the 50% Santa sales stuff.Had to call the cops! Checkout lady said she never saw anything so pathetic.

Between Tickle me Elmo letters to the editor telling "hoarders" of Elmo they would rot in hell for trying to get $100-250 @ a few years ago and the snowstorm we had last year that had people showing up outside a Payless store LINING UP AS the supply trucks pulled in to unload... I got loaded up on food relatively quickly. Been rotating and eating and getting used to a different diet ever since.

Anyone seeing this type of behavior firsthand doesn't need any too much encouragement to prep!

Regards,

I was at a k-mart today (in PA). There were long lines, mostly Christmas returns etc. but saw a supprising number of obvious prepping going on. I would say one in ten were showing signs (gas cans, piles of candels, batteries, oil lamps). I've been keeping a pretty close eye on the local stores and the last 2 trips are different by a large margin.

Shockwave

Status today in SE WI: Water supplies a bit better than a few days ago, oil lamps and ALL the lamp oil in Kmart gone. No more camp supplies. Water is now being sold in cases.

Spent Xmas in ND this week. People seem to take the Y2k more seriously here. No sign of National Guard, but as usual, ALL the civilians are armed to the teeth (God Bless America!) Most ppl I saw had these neat wood stoves made out of those metal barrels to heat the houses. Many had generators. I think these folks are alot more self sufficient anyway and it kinda puts me to shame!

When I mentioned the martial law possibility, etc to relatives there, NONE seemed to get that bemused "sheeple" look on their faces that I have seen folks get back east when you talk about the possible dangers of the y2k.
