Any news of Houston, TX?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

You people are scaring me! There are NO gas lines here, nor lines at the grocery store. Is it because we are in the south, and it is generally warmer? Have prepared some but slacked off in the past months due to "milestones" passing with nothing happening. I have a few more things to do but now I'm in a panic.

I just found this board today and it's great.

Thanks for your responses.

Mia, I am here in Plano. Don't get scared, deep breath in, exhale out! ;-) I can seen how just discovering this board today COULD scare you, though. Please keep in mind we have all been waiting to see if anything will happen for literally months and months, so we report ANYTHING suspicious. Sometimes it is relevant and important, sometimes it isn't.

I would advise topping off the gas tanks and restricting travel soon.

I just asked William in Dallas and Lisa in far northeast TX if we could sorta compare notes as we get closer since we are in the same area.....maybe you could be our Houston connection?

Mia: I have friends in Spring who have done nothing to prepare. They have a 5 yr old, an 18 month old, and a 3 month old. Needless to say, I am worried about them.

Welcome and Merry Christmas! You couldn't find a better group of people in the whole wide world, and I mean this with all my heart! Most of us are praying for a "happy" New Year. I hope you are also. The sad part though is, from what has been posted in the last 2 days, this forum will cease to exist as of just before the rollover. YOU WILL BE "on your own"... unfortunately. I hope everyone has their "mental" preps ready!

Mia... Quite a lot of people here have researched Y2K seriously for the last 12-18 months. And from that experience I think you will find we still don't know the answer to what will happen. What we do know is that their is high risks of a Y2K accident that may or may not effect us in various ways. Just as with insurance for a car accident, many of us have preped (insured) ourselves for Y2K.

First of all don't panic, you can find prep lists on many web sites. Make a plan, inventory your current assets, and fill in the missing necessitities as best you can in the time left. You will still be better prepared than many may be if y2k is a train wreck.

Second, in answer to your question "why is not one preparing?" -- Its simple to us who have followed Y2K for 18+ months. The government also had a plan, in which they knew they (and business organization) could never fix everything in time, and if that was to become common knowledge, people would panic. So their plan was a massive PR campaigne to tell people there was not any problem (so as to avoid panic), while trying to encourage a certain limited amount of preparing by individuals and companies. The companies to a certain degree saw through the PR - Bulls***... You are one of the few individuals who was able to see, maybe things aren't all like the government makes them out to be.

Truth is the gov is gambling... maybe they win the roll of the dice and maybe they dont. But if they loose, and Y2K is bad, we are hurt by their taking this chance.

Mia, you still have 3 days. Use them wisely. No shortages at the Walmarts in Missouri City and Richmond.

Mia,

I live just outside Beaumont. Been on the forum for two years now, and have heavily prepped. I know some local places to get "stuff". If you need help, email me, the add is real.

And you're right. I went out today, and saw NO lines, NO stocking up, NO obvious concern whatsoever. Boy, I hope that I'm dumb and they're lucky!

Mia,

All is calm here in Mckinney tx. One station on HWY 75 (380 Exist)has plastic bags on all its pumps. But there are no lines. Was able to find 5 gallon plastic gas containers, although they have been very difficult to find. Must have walked into the store at the right time. Food stores all seem normal.

Agree this is an excellent information exchange.

We talked it over when my husband got home and I feel better. Between me, my sister and brother we are very well prepared. My brother is a sort of MacGyver type. Big house in the country with one of us doing gas and propane, another staples, another extras, so together we'll be prepared, I pray. I really believe there will be a snowball effect with January 1 being a BITR(is that right?) gradually worsening to TEOTWAWKI sometime in the future. But if I'm wrong and it is bad on Jan.1, I'm afraid I won't be packed and ready!

By the way, we were out and about this evening and NO lines at the pumps.

Hello Mia... from one who lives near Cleveland, just north of the big city, nope, no gas lines here either, though the prices have steadily increased in the last two months. If you have prepared some, you are ahead of most of the crowd. Seems the wife went to Wal-Mart this day, and the gasoline cans were going very fast, so some may be awakening. Welcome...addy is real

Mia,

Can you panic when you are already prepared? I guess so. It isn't too bad---I have cases of artichoke hearts and asparagus, Edward has the booze. With your wheat and rice, we'll be o.k.!
