Storage battery gizmo. Opinions please

I was in "Big Lots" today and saw a storage battery thingy that can be charged either by house current or by plugging it into the cigar lighter of you car. It puts out 12 volts. I can see the advantage to charging it with your car, but I don't know how long it would run an appliance through a inverter. Is there any formula that I could apply to determine if it's worth the $50.00 they are asking for it?

Answers

1) How big is the battery in "thingy"

2) What appliance do you plan to run?

3) What type of inverter do you plan to use?

4) What is the effeciency rate of the inverter?

that's the first part of the formula. there's more.

personally, I have one of these and for $50, it pays for itself after the first 2 times I use it to jump someones car to start it. that's all its designed for.
