Railroads will shut down trains on New Year's Eve

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Just before midnight on New Year's Eve, the railroads will shut down trains to make sure they don't get stuck on street crossings.

The railroads won't have many trains running anyway because most big industries shut down during the holiday.

Any trains running on New Year's Eve will stop by 11:55 p.m. somewhere where they aren't blocking a crossing, CXS spokesman Gary Wollenhaupt said.

Amtrak trains will follow the same directive, he said.

Norfolk Southern Corp. will park its trains on New Year's Eve and plans to fully resume by 7 a.m. Jan. 2, said spokesman Frank Brown.

The company has spent more than $20 million on its Y2K readiness plan, but will stop running that night to avoid blocking crossings in the event the trains can't go any farther, Brown said.

"We think we are prepared, but it's a good precaution to take," he said.

That's funny - trains usually roll over before they stop.
