CAPE TOWN -- Determined to keep crime
under control during millennium celebrations,
the government is to deploy between 60 000
and 70 000 police to keep watch over
revellers across South Africa.

Andre Pruis, a provincial police official, told
reporters yesterday that 46 helicopters and
20 aircraft would be used to monitor
festivities and that thousands of police
reservists were on standby in case of any
trouble.
