From a friend at FBI: There are many threats...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

For what it is worth.

Probably not surprising to most people here, a friend of mine who works in the FBI told me tonight that there are many "credible" threats both domestic and international despite the government line that "no credible threats have been received."

Ditto from a friend of ours who is FBI. Achmed in Seattle was real.

Only a complete fool could think that there *aren't* credible threats.

There are plenty of lunatics in the world, and common sense tells you that at least *some* of them will try to seize the opportunity to hit us as the moment at which they perceive us to be at our weakest.

Ridley,

I don't know your "handle" well enough to be able to objectively evaluate the value of this "friend" post, but as a journalist who has intensively read/watched news coverage over the past few days, this would not surprise me in the least.

The very fact that the story has developed to this degree--beyond the original State Department warning earlier this month--tells me something.

What is most interesting, however, is the predictability of this story. Those who have been reading government documents for the past several months, may understand what I mean by this. In short, we were all warned, several months ago. In this forum, at least, this is old news.

The only thing that surprises me is the current mainstream media focus on the potential DIRECT threat. We have yet to hear much about the "cyber-threat."

I suppose that may be next.

In any event, blessings to you and all who read this.

:)

When the NSA gets on television and says there is trouble, you can just about bet there is. Where it is coming from is anybodies guess but it's not often they are on television giving warnings like this. I'll bet there are hundreds of threats that they aren't telling about.

I like the commercial I saw tonight (Public Broadcast Advisory) about "if you hear gunshots in your neighborhood on the 31st, call 911 immediately !" Then they showed a still of a handgun pointed up in the air with the caption "Falling bullets kill !" Uh, huh. Like they will be falling in a celebration. If bullets are airborne it's caused they have a target.

Media makes me ILL.

Thanks for the replies.

FM, I have been lurking here for some time now, and have gone over the government documents (not all, but many).

I always thought that the threats from human action were at least equal to the threats of computer failure. I never believed this "no credible (or direct) threat" line.

I posted this because to me it is an example of the kind of new-speak that the government has consistently spoon fed the masses. I know that the "friend" thing bugs some people, but it is the truth and I wouldn't compromise their identity. The response came to a question I posed "What about all this stuff the government is saying about no threats (i.e. Joe Lockhart today)?"

There are credible, and direct threats.

Anyway, that is why I started out with FWIW.

Thanks for your kind wishes. Good wishes to everyone (even the pollies!)

Believe it or not...people HAVE been killed by bullets falling out of the sky. They have to land somewhere you know. I have heard about this several times in the past.

Peace....Cin

I lived in the Hampton Roads area of VA for 3 years. One day, when going towards Norfolk (Nahfick) a bullet fell out of the clear blue sky and cracked my windshield. It would have killed anyone it had hit. Shook me up a bit, makes me glad to be in the Bluegrass!

Cin,

Yeah, I know and I'm sure people have been hurt/killed in that manner. But I'll tell ya what. If my gun is barkin' this year it's because SOMEBODY didn't have a very good understanding of my intolerance for T2L (Time 2 Loot)or other stupid acts of poor judgement. It won't be the "falling outta the sky" they have to worry about. Gun Control is... "Being able to hit your target". Um, sorry. Just got carried away. (LOL)

Ridley,

Well, it's off to sleep for me. Again, best wishes.

I'll depart leaving you and others, with this thought to consider:

One good thing about the capability of television these days, may be the opportunity for us regular folks to attend White House press conferences, via satellite.

One bad thing about the capability of television these days, may be the opportunity for us regular folks to attend White House press conferences, via satellite.

Sometimes I mourn for the days when my family believed it could trust "Uncle Walter," Chet Huntley & David Brinkley, etc., to tell us what we needed to know. Those were the days--to quote Edith Bunker, sort of--when all things were possible, rather than all things being suspect.

Times change. Some things, however remain constant.

Among them, my trust in a source that enables me to wish everyone on this forum peace, regardless of how this whole thing shakes out.

Again, blessings to all of you during the holidays and the new year.

:)

Gun people scare me. I have thought about the need for a weapon, but more of a stopping weapon. Don't want to kill anyone. Baseball bat? pepper spray? does one need a permit for a stun-gun ?

unfortunately they DO fall in a celebration in many places.

like Chicago (where I live)

For many urban dwellers who don't know any better, this is the only time of the year that they fire their guns (possession of all firearms in Chicago is banned).

Illinois Congressman Bobby Rush actually got on TV and pleaded for a "Cease Fire" this year on New Year's Eve to prevent damage from the hail of bullets that rain down on us every year.

-- plonk! (realaddress@hotmail.com), December 22, 1999.

Cunny, don't worry about the good gun people. And don't worry too much about the bad gun people.

Worry about a pack of 25+ dogs that have been abandoned by their owners who did not have the guts to kill them. These dogs have been roaming for a few days and have decided that you would make a tasty snack.

Your last thoughts may be, "Gee I wish I had a gun."

One of Hyatt's posters has this tag line. "I don't care if you believe in God or not. I don't care if you like guns or not. I do know one thing, if you are in trouble you will want someone with a gun to come help you and you will pray to God he shows up in time."

-- woody (woody11420@aol.com), December 22, 1999.

well as for guns they are important if you live really rual. If a rabid fox comes up the logical thing is to shoot it....butcha gotta have a gun to shoot it. I will not be one of those that wait an hour for the cops to get here, hell it could've killed me and the chickens by then. As for the city I bet U got a scenerio too, GUNS ARE FOR AMERICANS, it is in the CONSTITUTION.

-- sandy (rstyree@overland.net), December 22, 1999.

The FBI is running around this country HEAVILY armed and looking for bad guys. I am not one who subscribes to the everyone in .gov is out to get us so the locations they are picking up rocks in are somewhat worrisome. I will not divulge locations but this seems a fairly broad active sweep. On the hunt for anyone who wishes me, my family or my country harm I wish them all the luck.

We might need it!

-- Squid (ItsDarker@down.here), December 23, 1999.

Do take the dog pack threat more seriously than any 'terrorist' threat. It is much more probable that you will see dogs pack and kill than a terrorist in your suburb. Do have at least a shot gun and 200 rounds of 00 buckshot handy. A rifle if you have livestock. A hand gun is you work in the field or woods alone.

-- ..- (dit@dot.dash), December 23, 1999.

If there wasn't any threat why would the FBI have a Terrorist unit running around near me???????

-- Squid (ItsDark@down.here), December 23, 1999.

Squid,

Talk to me, man, what's up? My e-mail addy is real.

Well, here's another sighting for what its worth.

Setting

On 1-94 westbound near the st.croix river, about 20 miles from downtown st.paul minnesota.

My "auntie" saw 4 unmarked, unlicenced RV's that really didn't look to be vacation vehicles on the side of the interstate in caravan. One was towing a dark green luxury car (she thought it was a lexus but wasn't sure). The back of one was open as she drove by. It was filled with men dressed in black swat-like uniforms sitting inside. Two more were in the front drivers seat of each vehicle.

My guess is they are some sort of anti-terrorist unit or something, travelling to the Twin cities to deal with a possible threat there. God help them if there are Nucular, chemical, or biological weapons involved- for the sake of the people around here.

Just a sighting, draw whatever conculsions you wish.

"Gun people scare me. I have thought about the need for a weapon, but more of a stopping weapon. Don't want to kill anyone. Baseball bat? pepper spray? does one need a permit for a stun-gun?"

"Cunny"...one of the basic rules in this world is "Don't bring a knife to a gunfight"...the same is true of bats, mace, stunguns, etc. I don't want to kill someone either; if I have to shoot, I'll shoot to stop which means hitting the center of mass. If it turns out the person I stop dies, well, I won't shoot unless I have a darn good reason and doom on them for providing me with a reason. Forget the bat, buy a shotgun. Don't fret over it; it's just a tool. In the hands of the average person almost any hammer will kill too but we're not afraid of hammers. Intent is real important here.
