Wonder why they are hammering the Canadian Border story?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Anybody notice the ubiquitous coverage of the canadian border smugglers and warnings about terrorists?

Listen--I am not saying it is not important to report, but watching CNN and all the other News, it seems like total over kill.

Just as I suspect back in 1992 that the press was ignored the obvious about our current president, only for their own self-interest. (They knew he and his [character] would sell mucho papers).

I submit that the masses our being set up by TPTB to blame any infrastructure problems on terrorists, not remediation problems. There is no way they (Clinton,Richardson,Kosky,Big business) can make the ole 100% compliant across the board a week before the event and not have a scapegoat. People have short memories, but not that short.

I heard on Cnn This morning Rudy being interviewed about time Square. The CNN reporter asks Rudy about This former F.B.I. agent WARNING people not to be in Time Square. Rudy says no problem we've got 7000 officers on duty!!

Answers

Probably more to warn/threaten the "bad guys" than to notify the sheeple.

Its the 'Boogyman Syndrome'. Divert attention to the real problem and set up scapegoats just in case someone is actually paying attention to what TPTB are doing.

snip~~Rudy says no problem we've got 7000 officers on duty!! end snip... How convenient~ now what does that tell you about the rest of the city. We all know thugs aren't the most intellegent life forms, but they've already figured this one out.

New York officials downplay threat of terrorism at Times Square bash

December 22, 1999 Web posted at: 10:15 AM EST (1515 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Times Square New Year's millennial bash, a once- in-a-lifetime event, promises a 25-hour blowout complete with music, puppets and dancers.

But with 1.5 million revelers expected, the celebration also could provide a likely target for terrorists, says ex-New York FBI boss Jim Kallstrom, who plans to ring in 2000 far away from the bash.

His loss, organizers said Tuesday.

"People should be listening to the mayor, the New York City police, the Fire Department," said Jeffrey Straus, president of Countdown Entertainment. "I'm not staying home to worry."

Organizers began collaborating with authorities in 1996 to ensure the last night of the old millennium comes off smoothly.

Kallstrom -- who headed the investigation into the crash of TWA Flight 800 -- ruffled feathers on Monday by saying the bash was an inviting terrorist target.

"I personally wouldn't go to any event in Times Square," Kallstrom said. "If there is a strike, it will be in a large gathering. ... The prudent thing is to celebrate by yourself or with your family."

Many city officials and event organizers, surprised by Kallstrom's comments, moved quickly to calm any jangled nerves.

"This kind of alarmist mentality is exactly caving into terrorism," said Police Commissioner Howard Safir. "I will be in Times Square at 12 midnight on New Year's Eve, and my family will be with me standing right under the ball."

While officials acknowledged there is no guarantee of a terrorist- free New Year's in New York, they quickly added that every possible precaution has been taken.

"It's like Y2K," Straus said. "Nobody can say 100 percent that the lights won't go off, but we've got to live our lives."

Help Wanted
January 3, 2000
NYC has a job opening for a Police Commissioner.
Must be ready to remove previous commissioner from under the wreckage of the Times Square ball

""This kind of alarmist mentality is exactly caving into terrorism," said Police Commissioner Howard Safir. "I will be in Times Square at 12 midnight on New Year's Eve, and my family will be with me standing right under the ball.""

Let me see if I've got this straight--Now I'm going to drag my family into my false bravado---what a frigging genius. Maybe he would have taken his family to the building in N.Y. that was bombed before the fact, just to show everybody that he doesnt cave to terrorist.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWD HELP US!!

I don't know if any of you know of the Great Spiritualist Emmitt Fox from back in the thirties, but he said in one of his books that civilization evolves every once in a while to the point of saturated dumbness and then it is gleaned. I think we are at that point!!

"""Organizers began collaborating with authorities in 1996 to ensure the last night of the old millennium comes off smoothly."""

Well they must be having a bash at the end of next year...... hold it..

It amazes me that folks can't get the fact that next year is the last year of the millennium not this year. If they can't figure out something as simple as that how are they going to figure out the risks for Y2K.

Lets all be as stupid as the next person then we all look sane!

The whole thing was staged to keep us hding in fear, and make the enemies think they have everything under control. They are already talking about letting the guy go free.

Because the only other major "news" are all the press releases from companies saying that they are "ready for Y2K."

I am sick and tired of the references to the Canadian border and the hype! I have never feared a Canadian who come to our warm Beaches. Just because they wear dark socks with their sandals and shorts never brought terror to my throat. I just tried to push a "Miss Manner's" article to them on the "correctness of Fashion Statements". I am a TRUE AMERICAN THROUGH AN....., no, I guess I have some American Indian, some Irish, some English, Maybe some Canadian Blood? I refuse to fear another Nationality, because of media spin.
