I came to TB2000 in January 1998. I did one of those "travels of times past" recently.....what an experience these past 2 years, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's been a lesson in how the world works... sort'a... and how interdependent we all are... bottom-line... in ways we never even dreamed of!

Will never be "unprepared" for change again. And that includes having a stocked pantry, instead of practicing JIT food purchasing.

Besides... now I have some great new camping "stuff" I'd always wanted, but never made a top priority.

Even though I mostly just "lurk" here these days, and never was a very regular poster anyway, I have visited this forum since April or May of 1998. It is, uh, interesting. OK, so that's what you say about an ugly baby. But there has been an intriguing diversity of opinions and personalities here, and even occasionally some quite valuable information. Plenty of heartfelt posts here, with periodic heartburn mixed in. Overall I've rather enjoyed it--in the way one enjoys a horror movie, perhaps. I even met the love of my life here; alack and alas, it turned out that I wasn't the love of her life, but what the hey--you can't have everything.

I wish everyone here, regardless of race, creed, gender, and opinion on Y2K, the best of luck for the coming year. I suspect we may need some luck, though I fervently hope the "polly" assessment of Y2K is correct. I'm just enough of a dour fellow, though, to remember the immortal words of Clare Booth Luce: "I've found that the difference between an optimist and a pessimist is that the pessimist is generally better informed."

In this case, let's hope that the optimists turn out to have been better informed. But you might not want to bet the ranch on it.

Truly, it's been a revelation hanging out here. Seeing "right-wing" Christian Americans who say things like "Oh, the government is essentially evil, and they've pretty much all been like that for thousands of years, but it's really the corrupt money system that is fking things up,"...well, it gives one hope for the future. ;~)

I've been here since March 98, when five new threads a day was a Big Deal. I've learned astonishing lessons about communication ('how to say' and 'what not to say') by posting and reading your posts -- have found some of the brightest and best minds of our age; and some of the silliest. Have seen the confirmation of my fears and doubts, and the reassurance that kindness and generosity and charity still live in this benighted age.

It's like leaving old friends, like moving to another continent, like an end....and a beginning.
