Price Gouging on preps?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

There are state and federal laws against price gouging on items needed/used during a disaster. I found it interesting that Publix Supermarket (in Ga.)has raised the price of Chlorox bleach by over 50% in the last 6 weeks.

This is not an item that usually sees seasonal price changes. This store chain should be held just as accountable as the price gougers selling generators at inflated prices during and after the hurricanes in Fla.

Anyone else see signs og retailers getting greedy?

Publix in Georgia? You in the Savannah area? Look around, there's plenty of bleach at good prices in the other stores. Publix is only a minor player in the Georgia market.

Just bought four gallons of the Wal Mart store brand for 78 cents a gallon.

Publix's actions would only become price gouging if they did it during or after a disaster, which has not yet occurred.

You might also want to consider the fact that some price increases may be due to the company having to increase their cost for the items. This gets passed to the store, and passed again to you. End the end, we all will pay the remediation costs for the companies.

The price of Clorox has doubled here in the last few months. But I find the generic brand or house brand still very reasonable. Regular plain bleach is getting harder to find because of all the scented, and extra ingredients being used to push up the price of bleach. Stock up for laundry/cleaning even if you don't use it for y2k.

Hmmmm.... gas delivered in 55 gallon drums @50 cents less per gallon than station prices..... $15 for rice in 50 lb cotton bags, good for that new tank top you wanted :-) $8 for 25 lbs of beans.....

Canned goods at 2 for the price of 1, Cup of soup, 12 for a buck, oil lamps for $6, and the list goes on... a 1000 rounds of 7.62x39 for $114, 50 rounds of .357 for $5, $3 for 5 12 ga. 3" slugs, and on and on...

No one around here is saying Y2k, but they get it, imho...
