Turkey to Shut Straits for Big Vessels Over Y2K ANKARA, Turkey (Reuters) - Turkey will close its Bosporus

and Dardanelles straits to vessels longer than 655 feet for 15 hours from 9 a.m. EST on Dec. 31 to minimize potential risks from the millennium bug problem.

The maritime undersecretary said in a press release on Tuesday that ships over 3,000 gross tons carrying dangerous cargo would also not be allowed to enter the straits for 12 hours from 11 a.m. EST on Dec. 31.
