For those Mormons who know what their fellow-believers have actually done to prepare for y2k, I think this article will be worth as chuckle.

Church officials don't know exactly how many stockpile food, but it's clearly a popular practice to judge by the advertisements in Utah newspapers for bulk food sales.

The general accuracy of this story is revealed by its opening paragraph:

As the countdown dwindles, people across the country are scrambling to stock their larders ahead of Jan. 1, preparing, sometimes frantically, for potential Y2K disasters that range from a harsh winter storm to societal breakdown.

This is Christmas buying week. Head for your local mall. How many of these people do you think have water filters, stored food, and a heater that runs on kerosene or propane? What are they spending their money on?

Frantic? To buy a Pokeman, maybe.

This is from THE OKLAHOMAN (Dec. 19).

SALT LAKE CITY -- As the countdown dwindles, people across the country are scrambling to stock their larders ahead of Jan. 1, preparing, sometimes frantically, for potential Y2K disasters that range from a harsh winter storm to societal breakdown.

However, not at Salt Lake City's Temple Square, home of the Mormon Church, where the calm of knowing you're prepared is the dominant sentiment.

For decades, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been encouraged to store a year's worth of food in their homes, not just for Y2K, but for any hard times.

Seventy percent of Utah's residents are Mormons. Church officials don't know exactly how many stockpile food, but it's clearly a popular practice to judge by the advertisements in Utah newspapers for bulk food sales.

The church has a significant food reserve, one it showcases in a section of downtown Salt Lake City called Welfare Square.

A dairy, cannery, thrift shop and bakery operate under the shadow of a 100-foot tall grain silo filled with 300,000 bushels of wheat -- just in case.

It's one of 60 such silos the church has throughout the country, along with farms, ranches and factories that produce everything from canned peaches to peanut butter to beef. The church even makes its own soap. . . .

Mormon emergency preparations don't stop at food. Thousands of tons of surplus clothing are sorted, baled and kept in a downtown warehouse in case of fire or flood.

The second floor of the same building is lined with shelves overloaded with medical equipment, from wheelchairs to dialysis machines.

There is even a supply of ropes, tarps and tents -- so many that when a tornado roared through Salt Lake City in August, the city turned to the church for help. . . . Link: http://www.oklahoman.com/cgi-bin/getarticle?ID=420742

Do Mormans use electricity, gas, public water, public sanitary systems? Just wondering.

You, do not have a clue, to these folks.

Off course they do. Why live in the 1800's when you can live in the 20th Century? In fact it was a Mormon, Filo Farnsworth, who invented the Television!!!!

Lady Logic, you are prepped?!!!? What the Hell is this!! I thought you a "undoomed polly"?

-- I don't know them, hope they are friend (They@morepreparedmost.com), December 21, 1999.

I gave them a good looking over, several years ago.

Found out that just like every other outfit 10% of the people acted on the word and were prepped. The rest were just like Joe Six Pack. They talked the talk but did not walk the walk.

If you are planning on knocking on or shooting through a Mormons door, you might be working on a dry well.

Skull Valley? Is that a Prescott suburb?

-- robert j. (crandalls@cableone.net), December 21, 1999.

Hmm, with the Millennial stuff been going for a couple of years now there might be as much as 10-15% of the LDS actually prepped but I'd bet cash money it won't be more than that. Most of them don't want to bother any more than most of the rest of mainstream America does. Historically only about 7% of the church actually keeps the preparedness tenet. I've had this from several LDS preparedness writers and the church itself.

Now the ones that do prepare are generally very well prepared, very knowledgable, ususally willing to share that knowledge with most anyone and are likely to do quite well.
