Love those doomers. Look at it this way, 20,000 people just died in Venezuala due to midslides. 160,000 are homeless. Don't tell me widespread catastrophes can't *suddenly* descend on a population... What is the harm in preparing for an event, the consequences of which are entirely unknown, but which could be dire?

Mara, If your in the desert, theres no chance of a mudslide. Prepare for what is possible, not what your mind fantisizes. Y2K doomsday never could have happened.

Haven't been out in the "real" west much, have you?

Mudslides are very real, as are flash floods....those cnayons were created by sudden, massive flows of water from upstream storms and snow melts, not gentle continuous streams as in the east.

Rockslides too, further up the mountains, snow slides are very common - each valley has two-six "tree-free" areas caused by slides. All can wipe out power lines, roads, and houses/shelters/stores in the path. Any loss can disrupt power, gas, heat, transportation until cleaned up.

On/near the CA/OR/WA coast and coastal mountains, mudslides have isolated communities for days.
