Obviously Poe was not typical in his style of writing or in his style of life. His father left the family when he was young and his mother was dead by the time Poe was two. For the remainder of his tragic life things never seemed to improve much. He lost his wife (also his cousin), Virginia, two years before his own death. After bouts with alcoholism and general bad health, Poe died when he was about 40 years old. The exact events surrounding his death are still uncertain and somewhat mysterious.

Essentially "Alone" is Poe's way of vocalizing the unique and doleful life he led. He, from an apparently young age, finds himself with such differnet feelings about life than mosst people. It's this sense of isolation and sadness that's found in "Alone" which Poe donates to much of his writing, giving us the Gothic horror and imaginative tales that have been such a signhificant influence on subsequent writers.
