Wary VIPs ground test flight

The national carrier has cancelled TG2000 because it says it needs to concentrate on other flights.

Thai Airways International said it had to keep on its toes even though 24 airlines had cancelled 105 flights as 1999 gives way to 2000.

The decision to cancel the test flight to demonstrate THAI's Y2K compliance was taken yesterday, said Mahidol Chanthrangkul, permanent secretary for transport and chairman of the airline's executive board.

Sources at the airline, however, said many VIPs and senior officials, among them Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, who had been invited on the flight had made their excuses, citing other engagements.

THAI, which said it had spent 300 million baht upgrading its systems to beat the so-called millennium bug, is also expected to have plenty of empty seats on its scheduled services during the period.

Passakorn Surapipit, director of Don Muang airport's flight administration section, said the other airlines had cancelled their flights because of low passenger demand.

Mr Passakorn denied the cancellations were the result of uncertainties over Y2K readiness.
