One million to celebrate Japan New Year...at work

TOKYO, Dec 16 (Reuters) - Japan will live up to its reputation as a nation of workaholics this New Year's Eve as more than one million workers stay in the office to prepare for possible computer glitches, local media reported on Thursday.

Businesses ranging from railways to banks to computer manufacturers are planning to raise their staffing levels by up to ten-fold just in case the millennium computer bug strikes, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun financial newspaper reported.

Telecoms giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp will call in about 4,400 workers for the red-eye shift, nearly 10 times the usual number, while Fujitsu Ltd will have 10,000, also about 10 times the usual count.

Other media reports said most hotel rooms in Tokyo were fully booked by companies on December 31 and that rental shops had been flooded with requests for blankets and mattresses.

Japan, criticised for a slow approach to Y2K preparations and under fire for badly managing past disasters, seems to be pulling out all stops to cope with possible consequences from the millennium bug.

On Wednesday, police said they would more than double the usual number of officers on duty across the country to deal with any fallout from computer glitches or other problems during New Year's Eve festivities.

The government said earlier this month it would put about 96,000 military staff on alert and 100 aircraft, warships and special vehicles on standby to deal with Y2K-related accidents.

Where's PNG? With a Japan report?

The Japanese have always impressed me with their ability to "focus" once they've studied an issue to death. (Used to work in a company partly owned by SONY).

Seem's to me, Silicon Valley is pulling out all the stops too. Sort'a.

I've been in Tokyo on New Years. Trust me, all they do at midnight is ring a bell and shot arrows up a hill. What's up with that?? Heh.
