A Doomer is Finally vindicated - Yes!!! - a must read

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

OK, so I'm sitting in a TV room of a local dive with one other guy when a blurb comes on about Y2K. I'm cynical of course about the polly attitude espoused and quietly say, 'what a joke!'. He agrees, but mistakes me for being a polly, as in, Y2K is overblown. Usually I digress, but this time, I said, noooo, Y2K is going to be catastophic.

He, in turn, looks back down at his rubix cube and continues to fiddle, which is ususual cause this guy loves to talk. So anyway, about 5 minutes later the local news is on and there is a very interesting report on the local Vancouver skytrain that suddenly stopped working in Vancouver last night cause they 'upgraded' the sprinkler software. Can you believe it? The entire system shut down for this. Of course, the operators did the usual and went back to the old software. The best part of this though, was when the news anchor said after the clip, OK, but what happens to the old software in 2 weeks? (Hope he wasn't fired or anything for saying that, eh!!!)

Sooooo, for the FIRST time in a year and a half, I could feel the energy in the room change, that my previously held sense of 'wacko' dissipated and this guy, although not saying anything was confronted with the reality that Y2K could be serious. Yessssssssss.....

[Y2k Pro, you have been banned from this forum. Find a new place to troll. Sysop]

He re's a link.

The web article doesn't mention the fact that they solved the problem by reverting back to the old software, but I also heard that stated on the local BCTV station this morning.

Why do you people have to delete Y2KPro? I mean, is it really hurting anyone to have a some extra words on a thread?

I just don't understand why people around here don't get to choose for themselves what they want to think. If you're not getting both sides of the story then you're not getting the whole story! I mean, you should be happy to see someone who is so self deluded spout off about his Pollyistic views.

Okay, I see that he obviously irritates the Sysops... but still... shouldn't people at least get to SEE how "stupid" Y2KPro is by reading what he has to say?

Or is there some other reason why he is banned... like he has been making terroristic/racist remarks? Fill me in.. please.

Deem.

I think people are BEGINNING to wake up. Yesterday, or I.S. manager sent a memo asking employees to unplug all computers on December 30. The memo also told employees to EXPECT problems when they return to work on Jan. 3.

Following this, I received 2 calls from people who said things like, "I've been thinking about Y2K preparations, but just haven't gotten around to it...I think I'll go to Costco tomorrow and start buying some stuff." While this is better than nothing, I got the feeling these people didn't have a CLUE as to what they were doing.

I do wonder, though, when the masses will wake up...could they wait until after Jan. 1, or will it be before; what will be the catalyst?

People who were willing to listen to me have done some prepping at last. The others...I wouldn't know.

As to Y2K Pro--he never said anything to be weighed as any input, anyway. It's not a matter of maintaining a democratic forum, but of retaining a shred of civility. When I first joined this forum I was shocked by the idea of deleting posts. After all these months of being badgered by these rude trolls, I see no reason to allow them access.

-- Mara (MaraWayne@aol.com), December 16, 1999.

Well, okay, if that is the way you all feel then I guess it's alright. I just was really interested as to what was in the post that got deleted. Piqued my curiosity if you will. I guess now I'll never know.

Oh well, that's life.

Justanother,

Pro's posts are deleted on-sight because "he"(?) has been banned from the board. This rule was instigated because Pro repeatedly spammed this board on a number of different occasions. One post was re- posted 75 TIMES - completely disrupting the forum. Because of that breach of conduct, Pro is no longer allowed to post, no matter WHAT the content of his post may be.

Hope that clears matters up.

Dear Just@nother.programmer:
For the nteenth time:
Pro has been banned NOT because of his/her point of view (cf: Flint, Hoffy) but for spamming the board with 75 copies of posts each day for 3 days. OK? or not it really doesn't matter whether you agree with the decision.

-- SYSOP # 3 (Just@num.ber), December 16, 1999.

Why do you people have to delete Y2KPro?

He/she was banned for attempting to destroy the forum via denial of service attacks and spamming the forum. As you can see on some other threads, even disgusting, vile comments of no value are allowed to remain so long as their authors don't try to attack the forum itself.

-- Steve Heller (stheller@koyote.com), December 16, 1999.

Okay, okay... like I said I was just wondering what he said. Got me thinking.

I won't mention it again. Sorry if this (obviously) has been discussed before (for the nteenth time).

Feel free to delete this from the thread if it's distracting.

-- (just@another.programmer), December 16, 1999.

My, my. Revisionist history is such a fascinating subject. A lie, repeated long enough, becomes the truth in a place like this. I (along with others) was deleted because of my views on Y2K BEFORE any spamming occurred. I did not spam. The SYSOPS, seeing an opportunity to rid the board of all those who they disagreed with, lumped me in with the actual spammer. Then they repeat the lie often enough until everyone believes it is true. Facsinating...

What a pack of absolute lies, Pro. So typical of you and your polly ilk. It doesn't matter if you did it or not anyway. You're getting what you deserve and nobody else here is complaining.

-- (brett@miklos.org), December 16, 1999.

Fascists rarely complain when others rights are taken away

I don't know how many times this will have to be cleared up, but you have NO RIGHT to post on this forum. In fact, NO ONE has a RIGHT to post on this forum. That's because it is privately supervised, not governmental. You are free to start your own forum if you wish, but not to post on this one if the sysops have banned you. Get it? I didn't think so.

-- Steve Heller (stheller@koyote.com), December 16, 1999.

Y2K Pro:

Yes, those are my predictions. I stand by them. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong, and I'll admit it. If I'm right, on the other hand, will you admit it (assuming you're still alive to do so)?

By the way, weren't you banned for spamming the forum? I guess you were just trying to protect the innocents from hearing my predictions, right? So why reprint them?

-- Steve Heller (stheller@koyote.com), December 16, 1999.

Y2k Pro was banned from the forum for posting 20 of the same rude name calling messages all over the place. I for one am glad. He was not only a jerk but often times called people rude names. Voices of the polly crowd have always been able to express their oppinions. Y2k Pro was not trying to be informative only disruptive. Information pro or con is always welcome. Good riddens you Pro jerk.

-- Truth Seeker (sffrd@vtrt.com), December 16, 1999.

I noticed on the website containing the preint coverage of this story, that on the bottom of the web page, there was an area to click to submit comments.

I sent of an e-mail asking the rporter if during his research he found how the problem was solved. I specifically asked if they reverted to legacy systems, and pointed out how the rail system would still be at risk Jan 1 if that's the case.

I'll let y'all know if I get a response.

Maybe if others e-mail the same question, it might prompt a response???
