Air Force security prepares for possible Y2K unrest

Wednesday, December 15, 1999 - Associated Press

HURLBURT FIELD - Air Force security police are preparing for possible civil unrest at the beginning of the new millennium by holding exercises that have included a mock protest at Hurlburt Field's main gate.

Seventeen airmen played the roles of peaceful protesters, blocking the exit gate Monday. They chanted slogans against the New World Order and U.S. peacekeeping missions abroad for about 45 minutes.

"We're not expecting anything to happen like what took place," said Master Sgt. Terry Hindall, who helped oversee the gate exercise. "But we want to stay proficient and make sure we're still up to date on all our processes. We're trying to be prepared."

Other Y2K exercises will include a run on the credit union if people cannot get their money out and a riot at the Base Exchange if items become scarce, Hindall said.

He was pleased with Monday's drill. Although the exit gate was closed while security personnel redirected traffic, no tear gas, dogs or other force was required as the mock demonstrators were removed peacefully and traffic continued to flow.

"Let's not try to compare it to the Seattle situation," he said. Violent protests broke out in Seattle last week during World Trade Organization meetings.

The last time Hurlburt, headquarters of the secretive Air Force Special Operations Command, experienced significant protests was during the mid-1980s. Demonstrators and counter-demonstrators gathered at the base, rumored to be a training site for Nicaraguan rebels, to protest and support American aid to the Contras.

Airman 1st Class Douglas Tupper played the part of a demonstrator for Monday's drill.

"I was a little surprised how long we sat there and were able to stop the daily routine before things returned to normal," he said. "It was interesting to see."

I heard from a very knowledgeable source that the Air Force is diligently preparing to airlift troops in C-130 transports to Y2K trouble spots in the US at/after rollover. These troops will be there for civilian population control. Believe it or don't, I don't care...

I'm just glad we're finally training our boys to protest the WTO. Now, that's more like it!

The excercise staged seventeen peaceful protesters.I hope they didn't test their computers with the same powder-puff mentality.

Nabi, you stated that the Air Force is preparing to airlift troops to trouble spots. Of course they are, that's what GARDEN PLOT has been all about since it was written back in the sixties.

Hey all--

I just realized what my y2k plans are!

I am going to wait until there are looters at my house trying to get at, well, whatever the hell looters feel should rightfully be theirs,

THEN, I am going to hop in the car, drive 35 miles to the nearest military installation, and protest against the New World Order.

"Hey, look, we're just trying to get our boys PREPARED."

Ah-huh.
