Scanner question, need help.

Hi folks. I just aquired a used Uniden bearcat scanner, 16 channel. I got no instructions with it and have no idea how to program it. I can manually select channells 1 through 9 but don't know how to get the double digit channells. It has weather chan. and it works, and it was picking up local city police in the town where I got it, but it isn't picking up any police traffic at all now that I have it at home. HELP!!!

Nik..you need to get the frequency numbers for your area. Then take it to channel one, punch in the frequency number and hit enter. Then go to channel two, punch in the next number and hit enter. Do that until you have all your frequencies in. Then take you freqensies and scothtape them onto the bottom of the scanner so in case you "lose" there, you can reprogram.

ikoli, what you have is one of the "old" scanners. There are two possibilities why your scanner isn't picking up the police frequencies. One is, as Taz pointed out, that you need to program it for your local channels (which may be different from those where you purchased it); the other is that your locale has updated to an "800" system. If it's the latter, your scanner may not be much good to you. (My old ones still pick up the county Sheriff and rescue.)

There are lots of scanner and frequency sites on the web. Try searching on the name of your scanner, then try looking for "scanner frequencies."

If it turns out you need an 800 scanner, like the TrunkTracker, try to fit one into your budget. Knowledge of emergency services activities, Y2K or not, is extremely useful.

Check the Radio Shack web site -- they have downloadable manuals for their scanners.

P.S. Any relation to Nikita?

In most cases your local Radio Shack stores will have a giveaway sheet with the local service frequencies. I get that whenever I travel with my port-a-scanner.

Thanks for the responses, I have now printed out my operation manual and am going to radio shack in a little while to get a frequency list for my area. This forum has got to be the most valuable information rescource on the net!!

Scanning Reference Site

This is the best site that I have found. Frequencies listed 'by State' - then by town, etc. Lists all the frequencies you'll ever need. Also has information about scanners.

Good luck!
