I just received an e-mail from the Harris Poll asking that I respond to their survey. There were approximately 20 questions, of which at least 1/3rd were Y2K related "What will you do on New Year's Eve? How does this compare with last year's celebration? Have you set aside any preparations, such as food or water for Y2K?" etc...

Has anyone else received this poll by e-mail?

(Scary, I actually have an uncle named Bob...) ;-)

I tried to get back into the poll to review the questions, but the site's security wouldn't allow it (access was password-driven and only one time participation was allowed), but here are some of the questions I remember:

* What types of music do you prefer? Classical? Jazz? Rythym & Blues? Classic Rock? Country? Dance? Opera? Heavy Metal? Rap? (All different musical types listed in a graph format.) "Like" "Somewhat like" "Neither like nor dislike" "Dislike" "Don't know enough about it"

* How many times have you gone to the show in the past month? Two months? Six months? etc...

* What year were you born?

* What state do you live in?

* How many people live in your house? (Adult, children)

* Total household income?

* Where do I buy my music from? Club? Through the mail? K-Mart/Wal- Mart? Music stores?

* How many CD's/cassettes have you bought in the past year?

* How do you normally celebrate New Year's Eve? Quietly at home? Celebrate at home with family and friends? Restaurant? Movies? Parties?

* How do plan to celebrate this year's New Year's Eve? Quietly at home? etc...

* Have you made preparations, such as: setting aside food, water, avoid air travel, avoid other travel, arrange alternate forms of communication between family and friends, switch investments, withdraw extra cash from bank...

* After midnight on New Year's Eve, do you plan to check the following: check the TV, VCR, computer, electricity, refrigerator, stove, your car, the telephone.

* Do you plan to go to the movies on New Year's Eve?

* What magazines do you read? Please select all that you read. (BIG graph of different magazines to indicate.) National Geographic, Discovery, Outside, Time, Newsweek, etc... (Many others, but this is just what my family reads.)

Don't help these idiots by answering their questions. They put all of this information in a huge database, run statisical analysis, and derive correlations.

Then they say things like... "we found a strong relationship between people who read Time magazine, listen to ZZ Top, and withdrew money from the bank within the last 3 months. Therefore we suggest a study be done on the content of Time Magazine and ZZ Top music to find out what is making these people withdraw their money."

Or... "The majority of people involved in automobile accidents have eaten french fries within the last week, so we think there may be some ingredient in french fries that makes them drive erratically."

I had a telephone poll similar to the one you recieved about 2 months ago. In the middle of marketing questions ranging between toilet paper to video rentals the young lady on the phone asked me "How much money do you plan to withdraw from your bank due to Y2K?" I told her all of it, and its true, no more bank accounts as of this month.

I was really interested in this poll as the questions seemed totally unrelated (choice of music then goes into Y2K issues). I think that the governing bodies (local, state and federal) are much more concerned about public reaction than they're letting on...

Good for you on closing your accounts! I hope to someday have my finances in order so that I have the freedom to do the same, if needs be. Good luck to you!

I did one of those Harris polls months ago...then a couple of days later I was asked to do another...a few days after that another and so on...then I got tired of deleting them and sent a 'Remove Me' to them...so then I got more....finally I drew up a legAL CONTRACT TELLING THEM THAT IN ORDER FOR THEM TO CONTINUE SENDING ME THESE POLLS THAT EACH POLL WAS GOING TO COST THEM $50 IN A CASHIERS m.o., AND THAT i WAS FILING THE ORIGINAL CONTRCT AND THAT THEY WOULD FACE PENALTIES UNDER THE "SPAM' LAWS INACTED BY CONGRESS IF THEY FAILED TO SEND THE $50 WITHIN ONE WEEK AND THAT FINES FOR SUCH BREACHES OF CONTRACT WERE $5000.....NEVER HEARD BACK FROM THEM. };-]
