HOPING AGAINST HOPE: or, "Why Dreadful News Now Makes me Elated."

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I can't explain it and I won't try to justify it -- an inexcusable, reprehensible, maybe even anti-social state of mind, like the caricature of doomers painted by polly-trolls, only I am in fact living it! Crep'up on me, and I seemed to awake with it this morning.

I noticed it today: a state of mind for which I have devised any number of rational "workaround" arguments based on moral and civics. A seemingly perverse inversion of values cherished and practiced with an end of promoting the common good. O.K. .... cut to the chase.

I'll admit it.

I realized this morning that I was hungry for bad news, for terrible news, for disasters foreboding more disasters: breakdowns, service intterruptions, lapsed billing cycles .... even, yeah, even some of that transparent SPIN!! Anxious for threatening disclosures of computer snafus; or if not, at least for palpably dishonest reassurances from Koskinen. For the first time I needed a good dose of panic just to be HAPPY! The knot of dread in my gut. And was facing the prospect that if I didn't learn something terrible, and was obliged by disconnect and the Christmas Season, to think that ALL IS WELL, that it would be intolerable. Itching for the veil to be torn away.

Bring it on!!!

Polly troll. DELETE! This is nothing more than an attempt to discredit this forum. Wouldn't surprise me if it were someone from TB 2000's enemy forum. But who knows for sure where this neanderthal came from?

Its just like watching a disaster movie. If something big and terrible DOES NOT happen, then I will be sorely disappointed. For Christ Sake I've been hooked on Homer Beanfangs constant crop of reports from all over the world as well as from other folks about a failure here a failure there and the build up and suspense is killing me. I want something toblow!! The pressure is excruciating.

Its not my fault! Its the environment I grew up in!, its this damn forum, its all the good disaster movies I've seen (I saw Poseidon Adventure and Towering Inferno when they came out) its everybodys fault but mine. Y2K should have been kept a secret from me!! I would have been better off being ignorant!!

By the way is this kind of humor called satire? or is it more like John Belushi, Saturday Night Live humor?

First the good news - - - There's plenty of bad news
Now the bad news - - - People are suffering from the bad news

Squirrel Hunter, take care, you have been standing too close to the high-voltage power lines again.

>hungry for disasters

Well this post was one. Please mop up the floor now.

SH, I understand. You want reality to be real. It will be. Soon, the disconnect will all go away. I actually hope not. I hope we were stupid and wrong.

SH,

I feel your pain!

If you're serious it is only your desire to see a change, to see the shackles fall, to see the unscrupulous, calloused assed idiot goofs "in charge" get a taste of their own medicine.

Squirrel Hunter, out of concern, please read:

It's human nature to be drawn as a spectator to the horrific, and Hollywood makes a fortune off nurturing this dark sde. Freud did not just talk about libido's, or an instinct for sex/procreation, but also a death wish or instinctive draw to demise. If we explore religions for instance we will see some of the same dynamics to a grand scale (yen/yang, angel/devil,...). This response SH is a natural instinct identified by Freud, but one that most persons will inhibit at a subconscious level. The fact that you have raised this to a conscious level, and actually verbalised this, indicates IMHO that your ego defense mechanisms are disolving. In layman's terms "your losing it". I'm not trying to be cruel; we all go through stages, which is perfectly natural. The stress of this 3 week build-up puts all of us in this same risk. My concern however is that if you don't fortify your ego defense mechanisms then you will not be at the top of your game when TSHTF, and so you as well as your family may suffer from your possible reactionary rather than rational behavior.

Also note another risk: If instead you give into what almost sounds in addiction lingo as a "rush" then rest assured, as you develop a tolerance to this "rush" you will require more severe stimuli to invoke the same "high". In a quest for this type of high, persons often move from intellectual stimuli to a behavioral acting out. That is the tragic line that, when crossed, creates serial killers, rapists, tyrants, ... what we would call the evils of the world.

I'm not trying to scare you, cause you would enjoy that too much (haha, said tongue-in-cheek, no offense). Just cautioning you that this path will rob you of your good judgement, which might place you and your family in a careless situation of risk.

Well said Hokie.

SH, you may want to take a few days off.

Remember to keep one foot planted in the current paradigm at all times. That is what the Pollies and the DGIs are good for. They keep many of us from diving over the edge. I appreciate those, esp. Flint, for their balancing judgement.

Pray for strength.

Yeah, you're right. You're all right. I'm just addicted to this forum. Don't know how it happened. As for the "rush" and requiring greater and greater levels of stimuli, and Mara, as to wanting reality to be "real" -- I've got the solution. I'm going to go move in with Homer for the rollover.

SH, I knew you'd be okay. If anyone can take care of you, Mr. Beanfang can.
