3.5 to 6 mag earthquake predicted for west coast within 2 weeks

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Dr. James Berkland just on Fox's O'Reilly Factor.. gave his prediction for a 3.5 to 6 magnitude earthquake for the west coast of the U.S. within 2 WEEKS, with target date of Dec 23....said it has to do with record-breaking tides that have not occurred since 1800's....claims to have predicted the "World Series" earthquake back in '89 to the "T".

I know Jim and he is pretty accurate. His predictions are done using earth tides. There are, as I understand it, about two windows a month. Earth tides are the expansion and contraction of the planet. But keep in mind that there are earthquakes of 3.5 magnitude EVERY MONTH SOME WHERE ON THE WEST COAST. Unless its a heavily populated area, a 6 is no big deal and is quite common. Jim is a retired geologist of Santa Clara County in California. Taz

WOW I AM SHAKING IN MY BOOTS. I live in California, that is no big deal. Quakes of that magnitude happen all the time here. Now a 9 or 12 would be another story.

Watch this site. Earthquakes happen there almost daily. It's amazing how MANY earthquakes are going on every day. Just a matter of time till a big one hits close to home again.

There was a former (fired for his predidtions) who issued a warning about the Loma Prieta (sp?) quake before it happened...and he used a data base of numbers of "lost dogs and cats" in local newspapers. (cats particularly spooked by Quakes)

Does anyone know if this is the same person??

Me, I've always been partial to using bear fat for predicting earthquakes and bad weather.

http://www.bottlebooks.com/bearoilstory/bearsoil.htm

Get a bottle of bear oil or fat. Place bottle on shelf for 3-4 years. Look at bottle and interpret the swirls. Kinda like reading tea leaves and just as accurate as the tidal theory of earthquakes ;^)

I heard George Carlin was hoping to be in a "25" Richter scale Quake...

-- Don Kulha (dkulha@vom.com), December 10, 1999.

Yes, Berkland is the one who first made the public aware of the Chinese use of missing animals and aberrant behaviour of animals as earthquake predictors. He has a better than average record-something like 75% accuracy. 12/22-12/23 will be one of the few "Syzygy's" in modern times. Major gravitational forces will be at work. Got your hardhats yet?

Fred; a 7.5 would be a whole other story.

-- (...@.......), December 10, 1999.

Don, I could have sworn Carlin already had experienced a "25" in the 60s.

Jay, we have already had several 3s and 4s on the west coast this past week.

LM,Funny you should mention bear fat. Here in Bermuda, shark oil in a sealed bottle has been used for the past 3 1/2 centuries by locals as a 'barometer' for hurricanes & stormy weather. Extremely accurate as it clouds up the water, but has nothing to do with "reading like tea leaves".

Is this the same person who predicted that on December 10th that we'd have a nuclear war? Or was that Nostradumass?

-- Rich (rubeliever@webtv.net), December 11, 1999.

I'm (relatively) OK so long as Berkland doesn't mention the New Madrid, Missouri fault. This site has a neat graphic mapping the area that would be affected. It ranges from southern Michigan to north Georgia, and South Carolina to Kansas. Several large cities would be hit.
...three earthquakes that occurred in 1811 and 1812 near New Madrid, MO.[...] are among the great earthquakes of known history, affecting the topography more than any other earthquake on the North American continent. Judging from their effects, they were of a magnitude of 8.0 or higher on the Richter Scale. They were felt over the entire United States outside of the Pacific coast. Large areas sank into the earth, new lakes were formed, the course of the Mississippi River was changed, and forests were destroyed over an area of 150,000 acres. Many houses at New Madrid were thrown down. "Houses, gardens, and fields were swallowed up" one source notes. But fatalities and damage were low, because the area was sparsely settled then.

-- Tom Carey (tomcarey@mindspring.com), December 11, 1999.

I guess Jim Berkland was right. We've already had three quakes in the lower range of his prediction in California this week.

3.9 Tustin, CA 12/7/99 3.8 Baker, CA 12/7/99 3.6 The Geysers, CA 12/5/99 (near Santa Rosa, CA)

Source: http://www.scecdc.sec/recentqs/quakes.big.html

But we have about 500 quakes a day in Southern California.

-- Darby (DarbyII@AOL.com), December 11, 1999.

Just read a book about the New Madrid. Think it was titled "8.4". Fiction, of course, but if it's accurate about the size of the fault, things could get scary if we get a major event.

To Tom Carey: Thank you ever so much for that most interesting history lesson!!!!! I printed much of it out and will share it with my family.

Might want to rethink your hypothesis as to what causes tides. It has been known for centuries that tide fluctuations are due to the varying gravitational pull of the moon.

What causes tides? Tides are periodic fluctuations (rising and falling) of sea water. Tides are caused from the gravitational attractions between the Earth, sun, and moon. Both the moon and sun have gravity, but because the moon is closer to Earth its gravity has a greater effect on the water (which is moveable) on whatever side of the Earth the moon is on. When the Earth, moon, and sun are positioned in a straight line the gravitational pull on the Earth is greater. But when the moon and the sun are at right angles to the Earth their gravitational pull is decreased. This gravitational pull on the water is what creates the tides.

As for quakes, we've had two in the LA and Orange countyies in the last two weeks, ranging from 3.2 to 3.4.

Let's try sticking to Y2K issues, shall we?
