Just attended my first (and probably last) Y2K speech. Sheesh!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

The AARP chapter had a banker speaking on Y2K at their monthly meeting, so my husband and I went. It was just as I expected, if not worse. He said his bank had been working on it for two years and had bought a whole new system that worked just fine, and everyone they had contacted said their systems were working fine too. He told some cute anecdotes (the horseless carriage story, and the fact that Japanese officials must be in the air at rollover), warned against scam artists, and said our money would be safest in an insured bank account. When he said to have copies of our statements, I wanted to ask if the bank would honor our documents in event of a meltdown, but I knew it was pointless. His Y2K checklist from the bank reiterated what he had said. (Most people didn't even bother to take one.) An AARP official assured us that Social Security computers had been fixed, since they had started working on them in 1989. I had comments I could have made on that, too, but decided not to say anything. Not one word was mentioned about storing food or water, and when the speaker asked for questions, there weren't any, in a crowd of about 50 people. I've tried to warn friends and family, but fear making a future target of my home by being the local Y2K nut. Everyone is on their own now.

Pearlie Sweetcake,

Sounds like the town meeting I went to here in a suburb west of Chicago, only there were just 3 people at the meeting. I thought "what's the point asking these speakers the tough questions. Who's gonna hear the answers anyway"? I'd just end up being a target.

Best thing you did what keep quiet. Prepare, but prepare quietly. Keep a low profile and clean the rust out of the 12 guage.

Yes, about 10 months ago, AARP decided everything was hunky dory for Y2K--Medicare and Social Security. Really serving their constituency.

I forgot to mention, he alluded to predictions about serious problems, then laughingly said that the people making those predictions were all writing books about Y2K. ha ha ha.

pealie,

isnt it sad?

the frustrating thing for us - and for everyone involved in preps i'm sure - has been hoping that we are all wrong.

As I told my husband... I feel sorry for you, there are only two choices, and the best case scenario for you is that your wife is crazy.

Looking forward to a nice padded room with room service.

Socail Security program is washington screwed up - affeted an estimated 500,00 records .... but the press is ignoring it.
