How will we know if and when TSHIF?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Aside from silent Tv sets and radios, how will we know if things are really hairy out there? We cannot rely on the govt controlled media. If there is still an internet, we will still be relying on folks as nutty as ourselves. Don't get me wrong, but most of us are just a little bit biased.

How will we confirm a rumor that NYC or Chicago is in riot conditions? How will we know for sure that St. Louis is blacked out? I always have my trusty sw radio, but what if there is no signal? Does that mean that, "El negro esta arriba?" (the jig is up)? (By the way, most black people laugh at that one)

As you all probably know by now, the media is controlled by the govt. The sad part is, I don't have confidence in the alternate media either.

To whom do most of you look to for accurate news? Lately I have been looking to this news group, but that is not logical either.

Bill, isnt that a bit extereme. I mean you will have SOME KIND of input from many channels. You will be able to put the pieces together.

The media isnt that controlled, news will get out from all sorts of mediums.

Bill,

Get to know a HAM radio operator in your area. They are a very nice group of people and not much can be censored on this form of media. Go to your local Radio Shack and get some literature on HAM, preferably a directory. You should be able to find one in your area. HAM operators are many times the last standing communications link in a disasterous situation. If you want more information on how to do this, e-mail me and I will help. Just a thought for you.

You'll have a good suspicion about it if you're observant. Watch for news reports that seem to be old, or even looped tape. Notice how the stock market is reported, or if it even is. Listen to HAM's and shortwave stations. It's unlikely that a news station halfway round the world will be censored by the fed.us.gov. Even rumors of riots in the city would put me on high alert.

Bill,

Here's a big list of news/talk radio stations in the U.S. and around the world that broadcast on the Net:

Here's hoping that the Net will still be in good working condition next month...

We all share the same planet, but live in different worlds. If the SHTF there should be a reversal of the norm. No longer a world view, but a local view from your prospective. It will only be bad if its bad for you. In other words you will know it if it hits-ya...---...

Exactly, which government controlled media are you refering to? The one that brought down Nixon? The one that exposed travelgate? How about filegate? Oh, it must have been the media that went after John Tower, Bob Livingston, Newt, etc....

Where is this control your refering to?

You'll know when TSHYF (Y= "your"). If you're like most people, you probably won't care one way or the other until then.

For the last 20 yrs. or so I have listened to BBC on Shortwave if nothing else to balance my news input. I think the BBC has a long tradition of independence from govt. manipulation (if you don't count their use as covert information conduit during WWII).

Seems pretty obvious. We will know when the lights go out. Perhaps I'm being insular but when that happens, I will be concerned only about my immediate group's wellfare--not what is happening anywhere else. When I know we will stay warm then I'll have time for the world. Pam

The controlled media of which I speak is the media that told us that Serbia had murdered as many as 11,000 Kosovars. That gave us such brief and hazy information about the WTO demonstrations but showed us the police beating of Rodney King every half hour, for months. That even now does not report to any extent the explosion in Oak Ridge. That does not inform us of the extreme danger presented to us by Chinese presence in Panama but most of all, the media that minimizes the threat posed to us by international and domestic computer and embedded systems failure. That is the controlled media I refer to.

The media that supports, presents, emphasizes, and re-presents the Clintons' lies, spin, and agenda. The one that ignores first-hand accounts of Clinton's drug use - as late as his time in office as governor; but that created the drug rumors - unfounded and unwitnessed and unsupported for three months about Bush.

The media that destroyed one vice-president for mispelling one word from a cue card, and supports the current one with private, off-the-record dinner parties in the newsmaker's house: even though that vice-president lies about his past "farm life", his policies, and his contributions to society. The media that slavishly publicizes an unqualified person for Senate, but attacks (on cue) her opponent.

Need more? How many coverup's of Democratic crimes do you want me to list?

How did you find out about all these events? Were you personally involved, or did you find out through....uh..the media?
