MOMENT OF LEVITY

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I am as prepped, as money stretched. However, I also, found it hard to believe that utilities, banks, business were so naive, that they would not "fix" this potential disaster. I bought the whole "fish, line and sinker". Then today, somewhere else, I read this has been a "complete ruse". Your/my mortgage company has been projecting out, beyond 2000, for many years, and this is true. I have had five different mortgage companies that projected, well into the year 2000. The latest concern is all the Y2K fixes that are causing problems. Got one big snafu at City Hall, Teacher's pay, etc. What is the purpose, of all this? Well for one thing, it has given me focus for two years, and given me an education about things (political and else), when I was blind before. You can "flame" if you want, I am still storing water (it's free here in boonies). Just Food for Thought.

Used to,

Think for a moment about what you've said. Yes, the mortgage- calculation programs in a typical bank are carrying out calculations 20-30 years into the future, as are the actuarial programs within many insurance companies. But that's not the only kind of systems they have! What are the chances that the systems handling your checking account and savings account are looking at interest calculations 30 years into the future?

Besides ... there are just a FEW organizations out there besides banks!

YIKES! Ed Has answered! I am scared, now! Seriously, if you can possibly relate. Money ran out, long before aspirations. Imagine the magnitude of "Johnny Six Packers" who fill this nation? Gotta fill more water bottles for those who may have not. Thank You

Used To,

What Ed said.

If you look at one tree and do not see any termites does this mean the entire forest has none?

Let's have the source of that "complete ruse" article... this ought to be fun tearing them to shreds and having a few laughs in the process. :-)

Hawk

Loans hook into mortgage, hooks into AR, AP and etc. The forecasts you love to pan were done with calculations involving dates in 2000 and beyond. P+L forecasts, ditto. Look at your electric bill or gas bill or water bill that just came in or will come in this month. Payby is next month, right?

Only thing left to rollover in financials after the 15th or so is data entry screens and EOY reports. EOY will rollover to some date in (gasp) 2001 for an endpoint.

The hump in financials is already past.

Ed: Dammit Ed, you know all this. Admit you made some mistakes and get over it. Hellfire man, I liked your articles in Computer Language. Go back to doing what you do best and put this stuff behind you.

My Dear Mr. Lurker,

Sir you gloat a little too soon! The Fat Lady has not had her turn to sing! The Embedded systems are hundreds of thousands times greater in numbers, then are computers. And Sir...It is they which WILL take your world down the toilet!

Your computer soft ware processes information! The embedded systems govern REAL machinery...Machinery, which will destruct! Or just die! When their embedded systems fail. And though you call upon all the king's men and all the pollies and their breathren trolls.

None of you will be able to fix it before Joe Sixpack goes ape on you! He /she has been lied to! They will not go quietly into that shack (which has no heat) nor set at that dinner table (which has little if any food). They will do a Seattle " shuffle" ( on a national scale) my friend! I just hope that you and your optismistic, opinionated friends can find a deep enough hole to hide in...

And I hope that you can sleep well at nights after TS Has HTF. Because it was your's whose voice (collectively) lulled the people into stupor.

Knowing lurker,

Of course, they made sure everything works good for calculating payments in advance when it is money that you owe them. That's what they call "mission critical."

But it is a different story on the systems that calculate the interest they owe you, or the balance in your account, or processing your paycheck. Those types of systems are what they refer to as "non mission-critical," and they'll get around to fixing those well, whenever they feel like it. Good luck!

Used to,

Where's the "ruse" material that you read? Come on... I'm looking forward to seeing this. :-)

Hawk, please give me until tomorrow night to re-find site. Plate too full today. Thank you.

Seen your quotes before. You kinda make me sick. How many of your Kin, have you seen, take their "beloved material possessions", into their graves? I take it, that you must be, very young. Yes-siree Bob, My Uncle Rich, Great Bob, had buried, with him, all his hoardes of Gold, even had his most prized automobile, pricey auto, buried beside. Gotta remember, an automobile is only a "chariot" to get from one place to another. Signed, Original Material Girl
