Police computer crash stalls booking process

December 7, 1999

BY FRANK MAIN CRIME REPORTER

It's taking longer for the Chicago Police Department to book prisoners because of a weekend computer glitch, an official said Monday.

A computer server that handles the Criminal History Records Information System crashed Sunday after a three-hour test of backup generators at headquarters at 11th and State, Deputy Supt. John Harris said.

Oracle and Sun Microsystems are working on the problem, which Harris said may take up to two days to fix. The computer hardware failure wasn't Y2K-related, he said.

Bookings are taking four to six hours, Harris said, not as long as the old days when the process could take up to 16 hours, but more than the one-to-two-hour time frame since computer booking was introduced.

CHRIS handles about 600 bookings and 1,500 detectives' case reports each day, Harris said.

Until the system is fixed, those reports will be done manually and will later be typed into CHRIS, which provides online access to police records.
