Baygen Radios

I have one of those BayGen windups. It is only AM-FM though. Should I be concerned??

I also have an Info-Mate World Band Radio with Solar and Wind-up capabilities. I'm not as impressed with this thing. The wind up isn't ala Baygen and the Solar doesn't seem to suck up enough energy to recharge batteries. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would get a really good SW radio with SSB capability. Hams invariably use SSB, and they may be important sources of information. Get a radio that will run off 12 V DC, a spare auto battery, and at least a 15 watt solar panel to recharge the battery. Be sure to use a long wire antenna far from power lines, disconnect the antenna when not listening, and put the radio in a Farday box when not listening. a Faraday box protects against EMP, and is a enclosed metal box connected to a earth ground. Go rent the classic movie "Testament" and watch carefully.

If it comes time for the magic EMP protection boxes how long do you think the Hams will be allowed to operate by the mop up forces close them down? Get the Shortwave and review some earlier radio posts that list frequencies. If you can afford get transceiver.

We have a baygen light, and you can order an adaptor for power out to any 3 volt appliance, for example a short wave transistor radio. This seemed an easier option than a) Lots of batteries, or b) A new wind up radio with short wave capabilities.
