propane tanks, meters

Just a thought, does anyone know if there are any type of chips in a meter for a propane tank? (or regulator)?

Mine is all mechanical. There isn't a meter the fuel is billed on the amount filled and this is calculated by some computer (makes me feel all snugly). The regulator is a simple mechanical device.

I wonder if there is any problems with the one's that are billed based off of what you use month to month out of the tank?

Is there any display? Is it digital readout, if so then the meter may be toast but unless hooked up to a shutoff valve it may not matter. If there is a circular or rolling number the mechanism is more than likely mechanical. Either way it probably measures the differential pressure across a standard orifice (simple flow restriction). The flow or volume can then be easily calculated (Chime in P.E. Cook, anytime). If the display goes toast the restriction does not change meaning flow doesn't change meaning it would be wise to monitor the tank level gauge to ensure you don't get billed for 10,000,000 lbs or gallons when you have a 500 gallon tank.
