OT: Why is everything so SLOW today???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I'm sitting here wondering if I've finally broken this 'wonder machine.' Have I, or is everything slow today? I've been trying to do research all morning (in the Warsaw Ghetto today) and getting nowhere. I thought, "Hmm, lovely bunch of techno-geniuses at TBY2K...bet they know why this happens." If it's the web and not my fumblings, why does it happen? I imagine millions of people booting up and fighting for 'air' space. Just curious. By the way, heard the tail end of a news report that the powers that be are reconsidering the Miranda Act. They say perhaps it is not necessary to inform you of your rights when arrested. Anyone know anything about this?

My computer has been dogging today and acting strange as well. Never happened before. Anyone else having problems? I'm wondering if some hacker jerks are still trying to sabotage the Internet or if I got a virus.

Things do seem boggy. I just logged on at 6:30, and the Greenspun site has something definetely wrong. I think the web will have major problems anyway the closer we get to Y2k. I've had a couple of posts which didn't go on for some reason here. hmmmm.

I tried to make a phone call earlier this evening and got the recording that you get at times on Christmas or Mother's Day when everybody and their mother is trying to make a call at the same time. The message was something like call later all the lines are busy. About the Miranda Act, I believe it had to do more with whether evidence obtained without Miranda being read having to be thrown out of court or not.

Last night my wife emailed a friend out of state and 130 copies were received at the other end. Go figure!

Posted a later thread on same problem. I have visited here for months, no problem with conection. Tonight, however, big, ongoing problems. No problem with connecting to other sites, however.

Captain: Please tell your wife that I do not appreciate being spammed to the tune of 130 e-mail messages, no matter how enticing the invitation. Your immediate attention to this delicate matter is appreciated in advance.

Last week someone said their ISP told them that there was a problem with some sort of hacker/spammer or something on AT&T and they were sorting it out, but it was slowing everything down - posted on this list somewhere. Must have happened again???

I am having problems with Netscape and Explorer on many sites this evening. It seems to be hit or miss. Unusual.

I have not had problems with the Net being slow, but have had problems with even getting ON the Net. My computer is screwing up suddenly, and I have to reinstall TCP/IP protocols, restart the system, and reinstall the modem EVERY time I want to use the Net.

I HATE MICROSOFT!

After a series of checks I have concluded that my computer is working fine, but there is definitely something buggy about the net today. We'll have to wait and see what happens tomorrow, but a conspiracy theory is already starting to form in my head. I wonder if the gubmint is beginning to intensify their level of scanning the information flowing through the Internet in order to stay on top of any possible plans by crazy millenial lunatics. If this keeps up, it'll be interesting to see what the explanation is.

Every day at around 3pm, my net connection turns to treacle. I am in the GMT+0 zone.

See if you can work out what my problem is. ;)

Bill - I'm with you, I hate Microsoft. I'm seriously thinking about another web browser called Opera. Supposed to be a lot faster and FAR LESS BUGGY.

-- Guy Daley (guydaley@bwn.net), December 07, 1999.

Colin,

Very familiar with the treacle syndrome. Usually solved by a 'cuppa,' a biscuit and a phone call from the ex-mother-in-law in London for a chat about the day. ( : >)
