Ruminations and musings from the Backfield greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well let's a few things straight first off. NOPE, I am NOT the original Night Train Lane. This is kind of an homage to a memory of discussions I grew up hearing in the early '50's, as well as a handle of convenience.

YUP, I AM a regular here, but choose the Night Train handle for my own reasons.

NEVER (hear me?? ***NEVER***) do I post as Night Train in ANY chat venue. I passed through Bok's room the other night and what do my wondering eyes espy but ..... ME!! Espousing positions SO FAR from those I have espoused here that I HAD to call the hijacker out.

ACTUALLY Night train is my DOOMER alter-ego. In real life I'm more a middle of the roader.

Some thoughts as the time grows short. It is interesting that, as the Government starts to prove once again that the way to handle a controversial subject which MIGHT have a negative effect on some of the people is to DENY, DENY, DENY, .... SPIN, SPIN, SPIN, .... trickle the truth out in tiny packets in hopes the people will get bored; our serious non-doomer folk have become quite quiet. Is it POSSIBLE that they have seen their position destroyed by the very folk that built it in the first place??

Or if not destroyed, at least seriously weakened? I don't know, but it's interesting to note the change.

One would think that, as the time winds down, the folks who are trying to destroy the forum and the discourse which has been here historically (please note HISTORICALLY), would leave the forum alone, in preparation for the great "I TOLD you SO" orgy which is probably scheduled for January 15, 2000. I would certainly think that this tactic would be more effective than the disruption tactics we have seen in the past few weeks. Maybe we can hope to be left to "stew in our own meme" for just a bit, so we can trade final suggestions for preparations, late indicators of the direction being taken by .gov and industry, etc.

I certainly hope that the real old timers, people like Runway Cat, FRL'ians like Gayla, Donna, SOB, and Hardliner, as well as Puddintame, MVI, E Coli, dIEtrE, Watchful(seethesea@...), Libby Alexander, Halyx, Andy etc. come back for the turnover.

At any rate, I expect it to be the defining experience of the Chinese "Interesting times".

See you all around the segue, as we used to say in the radio station.

(for you non-broadcasters, that funny word is pronounced SEG-way)

Answers Hmmm, exactly. However, if the power and TV stay on, I can't see the pollys waiting until 15 Jan 19002000 to start their jeering.

If the middle-roaders are right, the real problems won't even begin until mid January. The only silver lining in this whole thing is that there might be a few shocked pundits round about then. It's not much of a silver lining, but you take what pleasures you can.

Middle-roaders? Hey, Colin, maybe we can further hedge the bet a bit and say that 'real problems' won't begin until 2001. That way, the doom prognostication society can add to our anxieties, write more books, come to your town and speak (all for a reasonable fee, of course). 'Middle-roaders', as you call them, want concrete facts. This group sees people ignoring their calls about 1999's 'flashpoint dates', see this new effort to extend when problems will occur in 2000 and say that something is amiss with this logic. Are we the only ones keeping score?

Apparently so.

Regards.

And I thought you was in the secondary, being a cornerback and all that. Excellent post though...see ya on the other side. My fervent wish is to watch the Superbowl in relative peace and quiet.
