(Anecdote) DWGI workmate plans to stock. HEY!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

As it says. My DWGI workmate now tells me that he plans to go "fill his car with food, just in case" sometime in in the next two weeks.

Context: this is a guy who plans to spend rollover 60 miles from home without his car at a city centre street party.

He's not at all concerned about Y2K. The "just in case" refers to wackos like me and thee buying up all "his" food. The thing is that he is still saying that "everyone" who plans to stock is a wacko. Except him, of course. He's only planning on doing it "just in case" all the wackos do it. He completely fails to spot the irony.

I don't grudge him it, he's a nice guy. And it's the argument I've been using with my closer friends and family. It's just that it seems to be more persuasive every day, and I'm wondering if it's getting to the time time for me (and us) to follow Ed Yourdon's example and just shut up and let events run their course.

Hmmmm. Interesting times.

Nah Colin:

They don't need to prepare. They can come to YOUR house.

He's been joking about that too. I'm laughing with him. But I'm not going to tell him where I live.

Colin (Cailean Mac Donaill?), I've been wondering for some time, since you're in Scotland ... won't the Hogmanay lump of coal come in useful this year, especially to the non-preppers? (of course, it might be difficult in the blackout to SEE a dark 'first-footer' carrying a lump of coal ...) :-)
