Y2k Bug hits Escambia County jail early

The Y2K bug paid an early visit to the Escambia County jail, leaving a problem that likely won't be solved for months.

Sheriff Tim Hawsey said Friday an attempt last month to upgrade the jail's computers and make them Y2K compatible crashed the system instead, leaving jailers facing extra paperwork and slowing even routine tasks -- from booking suspects into jail to dispensing medication -- to a crawl.

Manual locks are being used at the jail, Hawsey said. "There is no threat to the public."

But he said the problem does cause added safety risks for officers.

County commissioners are working with Hawsey to find a solution to the problem. But the sheriff said buying and installing new programming and updating records could take months.

Unquote.

The "fickle finger of fate" hath struck Escambia county - start late, and there ya are - in the pits, literally.

YMMV

But here's one Franklin, if you want to document it, this is a real time, real world Oh-oh. I went to the eye doctor two weeks ago - and he's an opthamologist. He said, you've been telling me about this stuff for three years now. I just received a notification from my supplier of implants which go in when you have a cataract, they put a little piece of glass or plastic in there. He said my supplier advised me that as of Dec. 31, he could no longer supply them because his manufacturing process failed the Y2k test. Folks, this country is set up with computer systems to control all manufacturing processes and the delivery of the same. So, therefore, we've got a real problem.

" ... buying and installing new programming and updating records could take months."

This after last month's "upgrade" crashed the system.
