How will y2k impact transportation?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I want some information on how y2k will impact things like... cars, airplanes, ships and the railways. Anybody know? Meaning... how does it work internally?

Derek,

What have you read already on those topics? Do you want vendor info, or general stuff on embedded chips?

Did you read infomagic and Gary North? They are pessimistic, but they explain the mechanics and potential pretty clearly. Gary North gives links to articles so you can make up your own opinions. Here are those url's:

http://www.garynorth.com/y2k/search_.cfm#Choices

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/1157/infomagic-2.htm

That should keep ya busy for awhile. Gary North has a Transportation category at the bottom of that page, with lots of links, to get you started.

Nothing like waking up a split-second before the car hits the tree, eh?

You have exactly 600 hours to read all of the information here< /a> and here< /a>. When you're done, let us all know what the impact will be.

Go! Sleep isn't allowed (or you'll never finish).

Close, damn tags! Links still work. Less than 600 hours to go...

Whoa!! Where've you been for the past umteen months? Anyway, it's good to see you climbing on board the info wagon. If you own a gas guzler, get rid of it TODAY! Oil, gee didn't we used to use a lot of that to move food, ourselves, needed merchandise, parts, etc.? Good luck!

Talked to my propane supplier yesterday. He
said that the railroad people told his company
that they could not guarantee that there would
not be disruptions in rail service. As a continency
the propane company will have trucks that run on
propane ready to fetch their gas. He acknowledged
that a truck only carries half of what can be carried
on a rail car, even when pulling a pup.

For a summary on transportation, you may want to read the section on "Transportation" in the report that Senator Robert Bennet, Chairman of the Y2K Committe, presented to the Senate 100 days before the millenium. It covers airplanes, ships and railways. To give you an idea, one major railway corporation has 5,000 critical systems to fix.

You will find the report here:
