Has everyone been blind? What's so unusual about the Y2K bug?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

My prediction is that Y2K will only a "bump in the road." It will only be a small burp in human affairs, relative to all other past, present and future human activities, which will combine to do us in.

Y2K is only ONE little result of human greed.

There already have been many very serious consequences of individul and cumulative greed.

Remember about a decade ago when there was a serious poisonous spill into one of our rivers? "Hey, this is neat. Now we can unload our gook without cost." Several other companies located on this river intentionally dumped their poisons into it at this time.

Need I say more about(some)human nature? I believe that it was Albert Schweitzer who observed so long ago: "Man will destroy himself by destroying the earth." From what I have experienced personally I'd say "Amen" to that.

What a completely idiotic post.

Maybe "Not Again" means that this was his last post, let's hope so!

this post may seem pointless per se, but somebody with this same name and email address has been one of the most interesting (though strange) posters on this board, from way back.

Is "Not Again" breathing too much helium? Is he/she a victim of the gov't spraying of late?

Perhaps a good night's sleep would help.

Not again!:

Perhaps you would be interested in my challenge? Let me know...

Dear Steve,

I'm sorry that I won't be able to accept your challenge because I agree too much with your predictions. I'm hardly a Y2K polly. Maybe you have not read my entire post. (Info Overload Syndrome?) Regarding the Y2K impact, I was speaking in relative terms.

I too hope for the best in this matter, and have issued a statement that people can dump raw eggs on my head if "the bug" has little impact on this world. If my head will be gooey at the end of the next month, I'll be the happiest person in the world, because one TEOTWAWKI was more than enough for me.

I understand what Not Again is saying. I will be happy if Y2K is a bump in the road. I have no crystal ball, so am in wait-and-see mode, with preparation. But the point I think is that much of the unintended consequences of human behavior upon the planet, our ecosystem, the fragile social system are coming to a head, if not to complete fruition now and soon. The water, the air, the topsoil, human emotional resources stretched beyond the limited understanding of the last couple hundred years or more. All of these exist,...smoke signals, if you will,...along with Y2K.

Am I close, Not Again?

Dear Donna,

You are very observant, well informed, and hit the bull's eye by visualizing the big picture of what I was only hinting at.

I'm impressed. Congratulations.
