Millennium bug bites bookworms

Five Germans are among the first to fall victim to the millennium bug - they have been warned their library books are 100 years overdue.

They must return the books to a public library in Aachen by January, 2000. But the computer's electronic brain could not grapple with calculations beyond 31 December, 1999.

It switched back to 1 January, 1900 - and the 100 years overdue warning was sent out automatically.

"This was only a problem with a small computer dealing with books lent from our mobile library," said library organiser Marianne Falter.

"Our main computer has been adjusted to cope with Y2K and there should be no problems."
