oil lamp wick question...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

Had a power failure during dinner last night. Our oil lamps worked well. I noticed my replacement wicks are too wide. Can I safely trim down the size wick I have to make it fit? Thanks in advance.

I had to make my wicks more narrow to fit and they work just fine. Another tip is to soak NEW wicks in vinegar and let dry before using. This makes a much cleaner burning wick.

The way you trim the wicks makes a difference in light. A rounded wick will be a different light than a straight wick. Also you can trim the wick to two points: example: M to get max output.

I was having problems with different size wicking for lanterns and lamps I have purchased over past year at thrift store, garage sales, estate sales, etc. I couldn't find sizes I needed until I found a site that sells all sizes...a 33' roll of whichever size you need is $2l.45...can get smaller quantities if needed. Addy is www.oillampman.com/start.html and can order via telephone. They also have caps and burners to fit mason jars...$3.00. Ordered a few for giving to friends who are not prepared. Hope this info helps others having problem with wick sizes.......
