Anyone know the web site for the government list of countries not recommended for travel in the new year due to their lack of preparedness for y2k?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the government website that tells which countries are ok to travel to and which are not, in relationship to y2k preparedness? I have a friend who's daughter wants to go to Thailand at the end of this year, and return sometime in early January. Naturally her mother is very concerned and the daughter thinks it should be no problem as long as she is not traveling during the actual rollover. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Brenda Adams

Stay Home! While the USA isn't prepared, neither is anyone else.

Banjo ---------------------- China Air of Taiwan cancels 35 flights, citing Y2K concern Bloomberg Wednesday, November 24, 1999

China Airlines Ltd., Taiwan's largest carrier, said it will cancel or reschedule 35 flights on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 because of concern about the Year 2000 computer problem.

The changes affect 14 flights to the U.S., nine to Europe, two to Australia and 10 within Asia.

The move was prompted by ``uncertainty about Y2K readiness of airports and air traffic systems within the aviation industry,'' CAL said in a statement.

Passengers already booked on the flights are being contacted by the airline, which will assist them in arranging alternate travel plans.

CAL said it spent NT$300 million ($9.5 million) on Y2K-related testing and to upgrade computers and software.

``At all times in our operations, flight safety is our prime concern,'' CAL President Sandy Liu said. ``If there is any safety doubt, we would rather not operate at all.''

Brenda,

Thailand is not heavily reliant on computerized systems and appears to be somewhat prepared to deal with the Y2K problem. Early on, the Thai government targeted for remediation what it believed to be super- critical sectors that provide essential services, and these efforts are believed to be progressing as planned. At the present time, it appears that there may be a risk of potential disruption in some sectors. U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Thailand in late 1999 or early 2000 should be aware of potential difficulties.

Brenda: The government "totally wimped out" and let politics be more of a consideration than the safety of citizens such as your friends daughter. On the U.S. site compare reports of countries like Argentina or Pakistan that are well behind with countries like Belgium etc. and you won't get a lot of worthwhile difference.

Find the BRITISH site and go by what they say about Thailand or anyone else.

Sorry, left my cheat sheet at work on how to do html links.

Go to www.ask.jeeves. Type in "y2k travel advisories" and click "Go". You'll find what you need.
