OT - Dec. 22 and Jan 3rd Astronomical Events

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Pardon me if I am repeating this info but it was new to me and so perhaps, new to some of you.

On Dec 22nd, The winter solstice (shortest day of the year) there will be a full moon (9:32 am PST). This event only occurs once every 1000 years. The moon will also be at perigee (at its point closest to earth). This particular combination has not ocurred since 1866.

On Jan 3rd (our first Monday of Y2k, the planet earth will be at maximal tilt, with the axis pointed away from the sun (winter time) while on that same day the earth will be at the point in its orbit where it is closest to the sun (solar perigee). These will create MASSIVE tides (proxigen tides). The moon will be waning with 8% of the surface visible (it will be fully dark on Jan 6). This event only occurs every 1,000 years.

At the same time (as has been widely noted here)there will be large solar flares. Now after doing some research into the solar flares I had originally concluded that perhaps it was a bunch of hype because all thoguh the solar flare activity will be high, it will not be significantly higher than peak times in the past. However when combined with the events above they may have a stronger effect.

What does it all mean? I have no idea. Am trying to find some geological data on the last time this happened but have not found any yet. Will keep yall posted as I find stuff.

CORRECTION!!!!

A full moon coincides with the winter solstice every 30 years NOT every 1000.

How ever the Solar perigee and maximal tilt combo occurs only once every 1000 years.

mea culpa

I wonder what the chances are of a 90 degree pole shift on Jan. 3? (Where the earth's crust rotates over the core.)

Could the rotation of the crust cause siesmic activite, say pent up pressure along faults break loose

That is what I am wondering too. As I am clinging to the coast of seismic Northern Cal.

Hey river..... I am setting on the New Madrid fault line. Sure would hate to have compounding probs on the rollover.....
