Y2K f***s the WTO

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

So what do you think will be left when Y2K disrupts the distribution systems that get all this stuff into Wal Mart?

Speaking of Wally World, check your labels when you go and see how much is from China and Malaysia etc.

BTW the last bicycle plant in the US shut down recently. We don't even make bikes anymore! Got JIT?

Ahh the acrid burn of the tear gas.........to be young again!

Forest, that was a bittersweet remark, heh. The posey is planning to round up the 300 now (12:51 EST), so I expect Wally to be fully operational tomorrow in Seattle. I think these are guard troups??? Does anyone have a visual?

don't you think it is interesting HOW WE REAP WHAT WE SOW? eye for an eye is the natural order. so what better way for "the natural order" to thank corporate america for their faithfulness to the american and foreign workers (whom they have ripped off) than to let y2k disrupt it?

Er, I *think* the demonstraters' point is that the WTO is going to oblige its members to make their businesses accept the best on-table offer, ostensibly to stamp out corruption and brown paper bag deals. The protesters point out that this means that 1st world companies can waltz into 3rd world countries and buy goods regardless of the effect that has on their internal economy or environment.

Or did I dream that?

Forrest,

I went shopping for Mountain Bikes a couple of weeks ago and found several manufacturers that are still building bikes in the USA. Are you SURE about that statement...??

K2 and Haro are some of the brands that as far as I KNOW are build in the USA. Could you please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks

funny you should mention china.

my six year old made the astute comment in a dept. store last week.

"Daddy everything is made in china"!!!!!

Out of the mouth of babes! Then I recalled how 80% of software in china is pirated. Then I remembered the IEEE essay about Software remediation and how invasiveness was the death nell! bummer

Don't forget to have on hand some of those Chinese shoes in larger sizes, just in case trade moves slower than you kids' feet are growing.
