Softening sugar

I have a case of hard sugar. Anyone have ideas on how to soften this sugar that is hard as a rock. I'd appreciate any ideas on this subject. Marie

I assume we are talking about brown sugar? If so, spraying with water, very lightly, and turning it over in a tupperware type container every hour for a day will work. Or just put in an apple slice or two and wait a few days.

If it is white sugar in a 4 or 5 lb. bag, drop the bag onto a concrete floor on all six sides, say from 3-4' high. This works great if the bags are well made, otherwise.... If realy hard, droping on the 8 corners from a lower height might be needed also. Then run the sugar through a sieve or flour sifter. Crush any chunks with a spoon and sieve or sift.

I get that with brown sugar. I put a cup of water in the microwave till its boiling then I put the bag of sugar in for a minuite, check it, and keep zapping it till its soft. Works every time. I suspect white sugar would work the same way.

Marie -

Try a slice of apple or a half slice of bread in with the sugar - should soften up nicely.

Fresh bread works great for me, just seal a slice or two in depending on amount of sugar.
