LIMBAUGH BRIEFLY TALKS ABOUT Y2K AND OPRAH

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

11:00 am Rush Limbaugh played a couple of audio clips by Richardson from the Oprah show yesterday. He did not, as he has done in the past, make a joke of Y2K. He did mention researching info on the web and also mentioned the Presidential emergency which Clinton may elect to institute. Not a long segment but was nonetheless shocked to hear, he has a whole lot of listeners.

Last Friday, local Fry's got 1/4 of their meat order. Couldn't find one piece of beef suitable for soup, so asked the butcher. She informed me what had happened and said they were spreading the meat out as best as possible so people would not notice there really wasn't that much there.

I heard him too Claurann and I agree that he did not make a joke of it this time as he has done in the past. He said 2 or three times that the government is warning people to stock up on canned goods (he said it in a low voice). He was actually making fun of Koskinen and Richardson, maybe he is a closet GI now. He made fun of the "have clothes" comment too. Rush doesn't trust the government so I can see why he wouldn't believe what they are saying about Y2K. He also mentioned the executive orders in place, and he has read them on the internet, he wasn't kidding about that either.

This is probably the most interesting news today. He might also know something--have heard something--we don't know about. Surely he knows a lot of people.

Rush has always "gotten it". He just doesn't discuss items on his show until they are acutally a topic for the masses. You'll notice he's no longer living and broadcasting from NYC, but from Florida. During the Hurricane Floyd episode he mentioned that he has diesel generators to back up his natural gas generators in case that the gas was turned off.

The first time I heard Rush mention Y2K was in April 1998, as an aside to a discussion about the fact the Gore couldn't expect to be given the same slack as Clinton with regards to the economy, and it went something like this....

......"if the economy takes a downturn (which could happen because of this Y2K thing)do you think Gore will be able to escape the blame for a recession like Clinton could? Not a chance......"

The Y2K reference was an aside. That he inserted it told me it was on his mind. The next month, when a GI tried to instigate some discussion of the topic, Rush gave it the standard brush off of "I can't believe that we, the American people, won't get this resolved in time...."

Rush is an entertainer, not anyone's political savior. He's not going to lead the next revolution, and he's not going to put himself in a "shoot the messenger" position. But I've no doubt that he is looking out for himself very, very well.

I listened to his segment today and it is CLEAR he was ridiculing Richardson and the crew who did up Oprah. He SOUNDS like ME and MRS. D in discussions with people we don't know.

Draw what you want from that but I suspect that a 5 or 6 wouldn't surprise him, as he handled a couple callers in interesting fashion.

In the process of "looking out for himself," Rush has persuaded millions of his listeners that Y2K is a subject only kooks and nutcases take seriously. He has been as instumental as Koskinen in keeping the masses dumbed down on Y2K. I have nothing but contempt for Rush's treatment of this issue.

One more thing I remembered about Rush's show. After he talked about Oprah, he went on to another topic and talked about that for a while. Then he went to a commercial break, and when he came back from the commerical break, he started in on Y2K again. His reruns are played at night if anyone is interested in hearing what he had to say. Maybe he is a GI and he's also a public figure, but is he going to stick his neck out? He may in future broadcasts keep bringing up the 3-day storm and to prepare for more than that. I hope he does.

Those who criticize Oprah should remember that she, too, is an entertainer, not anyone's political savior and she's not going to put herself in a "shoot the messenger" position.

Give her a break and let people think for themselves. You did.

Oprah just put her self in the shoot the messanger position by participating in the SNOW THE PUBLIC show. People will blame her for not getting the true story out to them.
