old negatives - rewashing

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

I received several boxes of old 35mm strip b/w negatives (approx 10 - 15 years old). When originally processed the fixer was not completely washed off. What can I do to save the negatives now ??

Any recommendations for best way to handle the negatives now? Reduce amount of chemical fixer remaining on film ?

If the images on the negatives is damaged, I'm afraid you won't be able to reverse the effects. Digital restoration might help to re- create the images.

You can wash the negatives now to remove fixer. I've never washed 10- year old incompletely fixed film: I don't think the wash will do any further damage, but it might. Scan them first.

Pre-wet, refix and wash as usual. You can do no damage beyond what is already done. Refixing is important if you suspect that the film was insufficiently fixed the first time. Regards, ;^D)
