I just bought 120lbs of wheat. What is the best, most econimical way to store it. My freezer is full so I don't want to use it.

Hi, I store mine in 5 gallon food grade buckets with a hand full of bay leaves on top of the wheat. Bay leaves detour bugs.

We store our wheat in the paper bags that we buy it in, in metal garbage cans, in a corner of our root cellar, which is acorner of our basement which is in a good temperature range to store potatoes, etc., in. We have been doing this for 20+ years, and recently found a bag of wheat that was about 5 years old in the can in the far corner. I had forgotten to label the can, and it had gotten overlooked for years. The wheat looked okay, ground up and baked fine, and sprouted okay, so I think that it probably maintained most of it's food value. Usually we do better about rotating the food that we have in our root cellar, but it is easy to overlook something.

Best bet is to mix diatomaceous earth with the wheat before storing in an airtight container. Use about 1 1/4 cups diatomaceous earth for each 5 gallon bucket's worth of wheat, etc. Do NOT use the swimming pool variety; use agricultural or food grade (try at your local farmer's co-op or farm dealer...ask if they can order some). It is also excellent for around the homestead and in the garden to keep insects under control. Do an internet s
