What does the letter mean on the Year tab?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : I-695 Thirty Dollar License Tab Initiative : One Thread

The year tab on my vehicle has a letter in the upper left-hand corner. I was curious if anyone knows what the significance of this letter is. Does it correspond to the month of registration?

Thanks, Pam

All tabs have a registration number on them that the state (local auditor) can use to track that tab. If a cop pulls you over and checks your tabs and they are expired, yet you have current tabs on it then a computer check of the tab registration number will show where it came from and what vehicle it should be on.

As for the letter, I think it is a control number or more likely a county identifier which the tabs were issued in.

If you have noticed, most of the license plate numbers are in series. There are certain numbers and letters for each county in the state.

Ed - its been a few years so don't hold me to all of the above
