Syracuse airport left without power

By Associated Press, 11/29/99 16:03

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Flights in and out of Hancock International Airport were delayed Monday when the airport terminal went dark for nearly six hours.

Airport Commissioner Charles Everett said the terminal lost electricity just before 4 a.m., when two main power lines failed. Niagara Mohawk repair crews restored partial power by 9:30 a.m. and were investigating the cause of the outage. Officials did not believe the disruption was caused by the winter storm Monday.

During the outage, the airport remained opened, even though hundreds of passengers were stranded. The runways and control tower were operational, Everett said.

''One of the problems, due to electronic ticketing, is that if you don't have your computers up and running, it's very difficult to track the passengers. It takes more time to process them,'' Everett said.

When the power did come back on, it caused another headache for airport and utility crews. Alarms started going off and each one had to be checked to make sure it was a false alarm, Everett said.

To add to troubles, smoke filled part of the concourse around midmorning, forcing USAir and Northwest airlines to evacuate passengers, staff and crew members. Everett said officials believe an engine that was working to supply temporary power likely overheated and started to burn.

No one was hurt, he said.

Passengers tried to deal with the delay as best they could.

''I've been on lines all morning, and when I wasn't on line, I was on the telephone with the reservation agent,'' said passenger Carolyn Westover, who missed a 7 a.m. flight and was still waiting for another flight at noon. ''It's been pretty frustrating. I know they are trying to do what they can, but that doesn't make it any easier.''

Rouge Steel says power outage costs top $2.5 mln

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov 29 (Reuters) - Rouge Steel Co. estimates that an electricity outage last week cost it more than its insurance deductible of $2.5 million, the company's corporate parent, Rouge Industries Inc., said on Monday. Rouge Steel lost power to a major portion of its plant on Nov. 24, causing a temporary shutdown of its steelmaking operations and isolated property damage to its blast furnace and continuous caster equipment. The company's larger blast furnace resumed production on Nov. 26. Its smaller blast furnace returned to production on Nov. 27. The Dearborn, Mich.-based steelmaker said the cause of the power outage is still being investigated. Rouge Steel has been operating its steelmaking facilities with temporary utilities and interconnections since February, when an explosion and fire at the Rouge powerhouse, part of Ford Motor Co.'s F.N Rouge car assembly and component complex, killed six workers and badly injured 14 others. The estimated loss from the Nov. 24 power outage is based on the extent to which it is unrelated to the February explosion, Rouge Steel said.

Syracuse was hit with a nasty lake effect storm this morning and I would guess this was the reason why and the article even stated it. I live 60 miles west of Syracuse and we had some snow too but not as heavy as the Cuse.

I guess though you should tell others that it is a common occurence in Cuse and other snowbelt regions in NYS. Since lake effect snow storms don't equal Y2K.

What if this had been a "Three Day Storm" instead of a 6-hour episode possibly brought on by a lake effect storm? What would the people, caught in this "consequence of a storm", have done? Where would they have gone? What would they have eaten? Assuming the "storm" didn't affect just the aiport of course. These occurances don't have to be attributed to y2k for the consequences to be used as an example of what could happen and how we should prepare. If something happens and it affects people, then it has the potential to affect other people and so on....
