Viva Las Vegas! The most screwed city for Y2K disruptions.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Just got back from a seven day stay in Las Vegas! Made 300 on the slots.. Blew a few K on shows, etc..

One of our friends is a local. He says that they are predicting five times as many visitors as their are HOTEL ROOMS!! The rumor is that they will call out the National Gaurd for help.

Let's see.. The MGM grand has 5000 rooms.. There are several other mega hotels.. I don't have a figure, but I suppose they have a capacity for 50 thousand people?

Las Vegas is the place to party for the new year isn't it! But what would happen if all those lights went dim and only 1/5th had a room... Rioting?

After Thanksgiving, (last Friday) there was so much traffic that I was parked for 30 minutes while trying to move two blocks.. We are talking CROWDED!

The last place I'd want to be is Las Vegas during the rollover.

How did you like those Vegas showgirls? Are they as beautiful up close and personal as they are on the screen??

I live outside of Vegas, and will relate a FOF story. After church today I was talking with someone and Y2K came up. He says a friend of his works for an electrician in Vegas, and they have a big job that has to be finished by 12/15/99. They are installing back up generators in all the pumping stations around the city.

Now either the water company knows that the power is going to go down, or they are just being extra careful. Hmmmmmmmm.

At a meeting in October 1998, I heard the Nevada Power rep state that their Y2K budget was between $7-15 million. Last week after the "movie" the press release readers on the news said that Nev. PWR had spent $7 million on their repairs. So they fixed everything at the low end of their budget, or did they? We will know soon.

BTW, for you Las Vegans, Nev. Power buys 45% of their power, so if it is not available to buy, well you know the rest.

KOS, the showgirls are very experienced mudwrestlers from what I hear. Don't try to take on more than 2 at a time.

Yeah, running out of water in the middle of the desert would be a problem...unless you wander over to Lake Meade. It's polluted though.

I live in Vegas,There are 120 thousand rooms, expecting over A million visitors.People are renting their homes out for 2,000-4,000 A night,4 night minimum.I have already rented my new home out.

As for lakemead if you do your homework you will find out that the colorado river is not far away.I ride(waverunners) at lakemead 9 months out of the year.IMHO lakemead is huge and I dont think there will be A problem with water here in LV.

KOS. Great looking showgirls.. I have to say. I don't see how the city could operate with 1 million visitors and only rooms for 120K visitors. What a nightmare.

G. Bailey, I'd consider going on vacation myself if I were you. I guess it would be OK if you were far enough from the strip though.

Good luck.
